A little video

Did it actually work?
I've had the worst time uploading videos onto the blog (curse you, lousy slow internet!!)

Since I haven't taken any pictures since Allie's B-day, and I've already shared all my good pictures, the only thing left was a video.
I hope this one makes you smile.

Classic Mother's Day video

Happy Mothers Day mom!  I love you so much!

Why can't I have a normal baby?!

Years ago I was at a meeting, stake conference, I think, and I was standing in the back of the room with my fussy baby Tyler. There was a baby girl laying on the floor on a blanket not too far away. To my utter astonishment, she arched her back so that only the back of her head and her feet were touching the floor, and scooted over to me. I thought it was the craziest thing ever! I figured she was the only baby in the world that had figured out how to get around that way.
Wrong. Another baby, this time closer to home is headed that direction. It might be hard to see in the picture, but her back and bum aren't touching the floor at all. We have a nurse that comes once a month to make sure Allie is developing properly, and when she saw that, she told me we need to stop her from doing it because if she figures out she can get around that way she won't crawl, and it will wear the hair off her head, and she could even get calluses. Weird!
Now I'm afraid to put her on the floor. She spends a lot of time on her tummy (mad), or in her exersaucer. She doesn't want to roll over, she wants to walk instead of crawl, and now this. Such a funny girl!

Joey

I've always been too hard on Joey. That's what happens with the first child. Tyler gets away with stuff Joey never did at his age. He's such a good kid, too, and lately I've come to the realization that I need to go easier him. I get too worked up about homework and chores, and all the little nit-picky things. Seeing him with Allie has really opened my eyes, too. He's so loving and gentle with her. Who could ask for a better son than that?
A couple weeks ago there was a lot of junk going on in our neighborhood. There was pornography at the playground that several kids saw (including Joey and Jason) and it was really upsetting because they're so young, and shouldn't have to deal with that stuff. It can really mess up a kid's life. But the thing is, Joey was upset about it too. I think the natural inclination would be for a boy his age to be interested in it, but he knows it's not right, and wants to stay away from it. He's always had that certain something about him--he just wants to do what's right, and has a natural tendency to be good. Sometimes I forget that, and it was a good reminder, even though I still wish it hadn't happened. So here's to being a better mom. He deserves it. :)

Today's adventure

There I was, minding my own business, sitting on the couch for a little break from cleaning my house. Then I heard a noise in the kitchen. I figured it was Tyler, although I thought he was at the computer.

Then he coughed. And he actually was at the computer.

Then I heard noises again in the kitchen.

Then I got creeped out, because it sounded like someone was in there . . . but they were making an aweful lot of noise for having just snuck in my back door . . . . I went to investigate. And nearly went into cardiac arrest as something black flew through the air at me.

This poor little guy was frantic, trying to find it's way out, flying around the lights like a moth, perching on the top of the bathroom door, and on Jared's pull-up bars. I was completely baffled about how he had gotten in the house. Yes, it's unusually warm for winter, but not warm enough to keep windows and doors open. I tried to get pictures but he was so scared he wouldn't hold still very long. We opened the doors and he flew right out, never to be seen again.

I looked at all the windows and doors, trying to solve the mystery, but they were all shut tight. Besides, they all have screens. Then it came to me; the dryer vent. I pulled out the dryer, and found that the hose was off the dryer a little bit, just enough to let a tiny creature through. (I also found a missing library book back there. Yay!) This is not the first time we've had bird/dryer vent incidents. Not even the second. In one of our apartments the duct going to the outside was so clogged I had the dryer venting into our house. It would fog up the windows, get lint on stuff, and make our sugar chunk together. Finally they cleaned it out and found a bird's nest and a dead bird in there. Nasty! Then when we moved here the dryer wouldn't vent again, and I insisted they clean it out, told them there was a nest in it. They told me I was crazy, they were actually quite rude and annoying, and I had quite the triumphant feeling when they found a nest in there after all. I asked the landlord today to put a screen over it. I'd actually prefer it if the birds stayed out of my house.

Church History Museum

Over spring break Jared had to go to Salt Lake to register to take the NCLEX (test so he can be licensed as a nurse) and it really was only going to take 10 minutes, so instead of making that stupid, almost-pointless trip alone, we decided to go and do something as a family.  We went to the Church History Museum because the boys have never been there, and we might be moving away soon, so it could be the last chance we have to go.

They were surprised at how big the statue of Moroni is.  It looks so much smaller on the top of the temple.

Joey was really looking forward to seeing John Taylor's pocket watch.  When Joseph Smith and John Taylor were in jail a mob burst in to kill them.  Joseph jumped out the window to draw the mob away from the others in the room, and they shot and killed him as he jumped.  John Taylor was also shot, but the bullet hit his watch, which he had in his breast pocket, saving his life.  The boys probably like the story because it involves a deadly weapon and an amazing stroke of luck.

There were a lot of fun things for the boys to do.  They fished on a boat (Nephi's, I think).  Allie got in on the fun with this one, with the help of dad.

Jason abridged the Book of Mormon and we buried Joey in these huge blocks ( meant to build a temple, probably).
It was fun.  Not as fun to the boys as say, swimming or the nickel asrcade, but they enjoyed themselves enough.  I'm glad we went because with Mitt Romney in the limelight these days the church is receiving a lot of bad press.  It was a good reminder to me that though it's not perfect because the people weren't perfect, it was founded on faith and obedience and is a beautiful thing.

Tooth Fairy and Baby Sucking Toes

And would you believe after his excitement over his tooth, the tooth fairy forgot to come?! Well, she either forgot, or got delayed by the rain, or she was just really busy and overloaded by children with teeth under their pillows (she's not Santa for heavens sake!), we're not sure which. But she made up for it by leaving an extra quarter, so he was okay with that.
(Oops!)

Here's a little video that is either funny and cute, or just kind of gross. Or maybe a little of both.

Playing in the sink

I was trying to do dishes and Allie was really grumpy and did NOT want to play in the exersaucer, or sit in the bumbo, and she especially did not want to play on the floor. She was serious. And you know how you get in your groove of doing things and just don't want to stop? So I put her in one side of the sink with the water running and let her play. I can't say she loved it, since she didn't smile at all, but she was definitely intrigued by the running water and the dish cloth.
But it really didn't help me get the dishes done since I was afraid she might fall out, so I had to stay within arms reach of her, and plus she was kind of in my way. But it was fun anyway.

Sick house

We have sickness at our house. Tummy aches for a few of us, and colds for us all. And Tyler has croup. Poor little guy was up at 3:00 am coughing, or should I say "barking." He had it a couple years ago, and was having such a hard time breathing I took him to the emergency room. He did not want to be there, and kept saying "I want to go home." So the next night when he woke up crying and coughing I told him if he didn't calm down we'd have to go back to the hospital. It worked. He calmed himself down enough so he could breathe again. So that's what I told him last night, but he said "I want to go there." Because his chest and throat hurt so much he wanted something to help him. I felt so bad. But he made it through, after sitting in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes.
Everyone advised us to keep Allie home, not to take her out because she could easily get sick. But I knew that really it wouldn't matter because most of our sickness comes home with the boys from school anyway. And that's exactly what happened. So in a way I'm glad I didn't lock her away because I would have been really frustrated if I had, only to have her get sick anyway.
Poor sad girl. She has a horrible diaper rash, a fever and a runny nose. I don't expect to get much sleep tonight.
Didn't I knock on that wood??

A Memory

Today I think I'll share a memory from my childhood.
When I was little, maybe 7 or 8, everyone on my dad's side of the family took a trip together. We went on a train ride to Golden, British Cloumbia, and stayed in a hotel. The train ride was really exciting for a little girl. I was surprised once the train got going that it didn't really feel like we were moving at all, and we could get up and walk around. I had imagined that it would be more like a roller coaster ride, all of us stuck to the back of our seats the whole time. To keep us entertained my sister and I got a brand new huge box of crayons with a built-in sharpener, which is always exciting for kids. My little cousin (Crystal, I think) came over to play with us and broke a couple crayons and ripped out the sharpener, and we were really annoyed. Apparently there was romance in the air; one of my older cousins met her future husband.
We got to the hotel and we were all sitting in the foyer and I headed to the restroom. Right before I went in I thought that I should tell someone where I was going, but I looked around and there they all were, and I didn't think all those people with all that stuff could clear out of there before I got back. But I was wrong. When I opened the door the place was totally deserted, except for the hotel worker behind the counter. I was shocked. Not knowing what to do I went back in the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror. My anxiety started rising when I thought about my situation. Here I was, alone, in a strange place far from home, and nobody knew where I was. I could never find them; I could walk the hotel hallways and all the doors would be closed, they would all look the same. The only solution was to go ask that guy behind the counter which rooms they were in. But I was really shy, and that option terrified me. I remember standing in front of the mirror, and just crumbling under the stress of it all, big, sad tears rolling down my face. After awhile I composed myself, dried my tears with paper towels, berated myself for crying because the guy would think I was a fool, and started rehearsing what I would say. It had to be short so I could say it in as few words as possible, and to the point so I wouldn't start crying again. I stood at the door forever, my heart pounding, palms sweating, trying to tell myself it wasn't any big deal to talk to a stranger, feeling very strongly that in fact is was a big deal, and maybe I couldn't actually do it. I pushed the door open a crack and peeked out.
And there, by the counter with the scary stranger, stood my salvation in the form of my Grandpa.
Everything was okay now! I walked over to him and put my arms around him, buried my face in his shirt and cried my little heart out. He patted me on the back, and smiled and laughed in a confused sort of way at how his little grandaughter had appeared out of nowhere, so visibly distressed.
I was reunited with my family, who, if I remember correctly, didn't know that I was lost yet. We enjoyed the rest of our trip, made happy memories. My Grandpa passed away many years ago, shortly after Jared and I were married. I'll never forget that feeling I had when I was so scared and alone, and he fixed it all just by being there. It's one of my favorite memories of my Grandpa.
I have many good memories. Some are about you! Leave a comment if you want me to share a memory I have about you. It might be fun! My goal is to do this once a week, as long as it's still interesting for my blog readers. Shall we?

    This Face

    Jason's Best Birthday Ever

My kids look forward to their 8th birthday because it's the one time they get to have a big party with friends.  Usually we just have a little family party.  I really hate doing kids parties, that's why we do it that way.
There are a lot of kids in our neighborhood, and they all play together.  So inviting just a few of them wasn't really an option.  So with all those kids, and his friends from school, there were going to be 21 kids.  Insane, I know.  I kept telling myself it's his only party, and it's just for an hour and a half.  It became my mantra in the days leading up to the party.

I wasn't insane enough to put a stick in the hands of all those kids, so the boys did their own pinata on Jason's actual birthday, which was Wednesday (we did the party on Friday).
And we had cake that day, too.
At the big party we had colorful cupcakes and icecream.  Allie wandered aound trying to jam candles into everyone's cupcakes.
We played 3 games: musical "papers" (no chairs, that would have been impossible, since we only own 5), a game where the kids stood on a chair and tried to drop Q-tips into a jar, and a fishing game, which was a huge hit.  It's always the favorite thing at little carnivals, that's why I decided to do it.  I wish I'd taken  more pictures, but I was too busy running the show.
Instead of a pinata, I got the idea from Pinterest to fill balloons with candy and little toys, and let each kid take turns picking one and popping it with a pin.  They loved it!  And there were no blindfolded kids swinging sticks around, which is always a good thing.
The party was Insane Chaos.  Joey and his friend Albeny were lifesavers, I couldn't have done it without them.  All the kids had a blast, and Jason said it was the best birthday EVER.

    Colorado weekend

We just got home from Colorado.  We drove past a bunch of wildfires and had to take a detour off I-70 because of one.  Crazy!
We were worried about how Allie would do in the car, but she was a little angel!  She hardly cried at all,  thank goodness.
The boys had a blast and didn't want to come home.  One day Grandma and Grandpa brought out icecubes they had made with a bunch of coins frozen in them.  The boys shot them with water guns to get the money.  They loved it!

Allie loved it too, until we decided it was a choking hazard, not to mention gross (money is dirty, yuck)
They had fun all week with their cousins, Emmett and Wesley.

Jared had a job interview while we were there, which went really well.  Cross your fingers!
It was a good weekend, and good to come home, too.  The thought of maybe moving to Colorado makes me realize how much I love Utah.

    Jason's tooth

Jason's reading homework last night: (Isn't the picture awesome?) Sure enough, he woke up this morning and . . .

And just for fun I thought I'd share this owl he made at school in art. I like it.
