Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to come with four variants?

Samsung will reportedly launch the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with four different model options suitable for all price ranges.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is tipped for a launch with four different price tags, with the specs adjusted according to each price range from top-tier to budget.

The information comes from Korean news site ETNews, which details the vague specs of each level of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

It is not known yet whether each device will have a slightly different name, but for now it seems that  they will all fall under the umbrella of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 name.

Each device will retain the same processor – likely to be the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa or Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, both with an unusual 3GB of RAM – and a huge 5.7-inch display.

The most expensive Galaxy Note 3 will supposedly come with a shatterproof AMOLED display and be made from unknown “high-quality materials”, moving away from the plastic body of the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The high-end option could also pack a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Moving down a tier, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will retain the 13-megapixel rear camera but only have a regular AMOLED screen.

The third most expensive option will revert to an LCD display with that 13-megapixel camera, while the cheapest model will only have an 8-megapixel rear camera and an LCD screen.

All three of the lower models will lose the “high-quality” body in favour of the plastic bodies seen on the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and other smartphones in the Samsung Galaxy range.

Previous rumours suggest the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be vastly thinner than the 9.4mm Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at 8mm thick.

We should see that 5.7-inch display pack Full 1080p HD resolutions as well, aside from its LCD or AMOLED status.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is strongly tipped to make an appearance on the eve of the Berlin-based IFA conference in September.

Apple celebrates 5 years of iOS App Store with free apps and games

A number of top iOS apps and games have seen their prices slashed to zero, coinciding with the App Store's fifth birthday.

While Apple hasn't made any official announcement yet, it's clear that some special celebrations are in store to mark the iOS App Store hitting five this week.

To kick things off, some apps and games have already been made free to download. These are some premium offerings, too.

On the games front, the likes of Tiny Wings (both the iPhone and iPad versions), Infinity Blade II, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Where's My Water? and Badland can all be picked up for nothing.

The Unreal Engine-powered Infinity Blade II in particular is a bit of a steal, as it usually costs £4.99. Badland formerly cost £2.49.

When it comes to apps, there are some even more generous offers. Traktor DJ, an acclaimed pro music mixing app, normally costs £13.99, but is now free.

Day One, a polished journal app; Over, which lets you overlay your photos with professional-looking text; and Barefoot World Atlas, an interactive 3D globe for kids, have also gone free.

None of these apps or games have any blurb to explain the price drop, but we'd bet anything that Apple will announce something later this week - possibly on Wednesday, which will mark five years to the day since the iOS App Store first came online.

Security bug means virtually all Android devices could be prone to hackers

A security flaw discovered in almost all Android devices means that post-1.6 versions of the OS could be open to intrusion.

The information was released by Bluebox Security, which claims that the "Android master key" makes 99 per cent of devices vulnerable – that's about 900 million devices.

The flaw is down to the way Android app updates are verified, as developers are able to modify the code of an app update without breaking the cryptographic signature. In other words, it's easy for them to hack in and put some nasty code in an app on the store that appears perfectly innocent.

"Depending on the type of application, a hacker can exploit the vulnerability for anything from data theft to creation of a mobile botnet," said Bluebox on the potential risks.

Paranoid Android

What's worse, the flaw has existed ever since Android 1.6. Bluebox claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the only device not prone to the problem, suggesting a patch may have already been installed on the phone.

Google, which was informed of the exploit in February and is said to have since notified its device partners, and apparently working on an update for its Nexus line, but the responsibility to create and dispatch the patch for other devices lies with their respective manufacturers.

Microsoft rumoured to be cutting Surface RT price

Microsoft is all set to cut the price of its Surface RT tablet by $150, if a recent internet rumour is to be believed.

According to The Verge, which is citing "sources familiar with Microsoft's Surface plans," the current iteration of the Surface RT tablet could be cut to $349 (for the 32GB model) as early as next week.

The 64GB model will be cut to $449.99, whilst you'll be able to add a Touch Cover to either model for $100 extra.

Such a price cut would follow slow sales of the stripped-back Windows 8 RT tablet. Microsoft has even tried to sell the device off to schools in the past for just $199 a piece.

The reports also comes in the wake of news that Microsoft is to launch the next generation of Surface RT and Surface Pro over the coming 12 months. The company outlined its plans to do so at this week's Worldwide Partner Conference.

We previously reported that the next Surface RT would run on a Snapdragon 800 CPU, which would enable the inclusion of 4G connectivity.

Meanwhile the next Surface Pro, which will run a full version of Windows 8.1, will likely sport a new Intel Haswell processor.

It's also rumoured that Microsoft is working on a new battery-equipped keyboard cover for the next generation of its Surface tablets.

Nook HD price dropped to just £99 for limited period

Barnes & Noble has slashed the price of its Nook HD and Nook HD Plus tablets as part of the Get Reading festival happening this month.

The Nook HD and Nook HD tablets will be available at a new lower price point in conjunction with the Get Reading festival on July 13.

For a limited time, the 7-inch Nook HD will be priced at £99 for the 8GB edition, or £129 for the 16GB version. The larger 9-inch Nook HD Plus prices now start at £149 for 16GB of internal storage, while 32GB will set consumers back £179.

That means Barnes & Noble has shaved £30 off the RRP of each of those tablet models to celebrate the Get Reading festival taking place in Trafalgar Square on July 13.

Anyone wishing to purchase one at the new lower price points will have to do so pretty sharpish, as the offer only extends until July 31.

“To celebrate the free Get Reading festival and to help make digital reading more affordable across the UK, we have reduced prices on our award-winning Nook HD and Nook HD tablets for a limited time,” said Jim Hilt, MD of Barnes & Noble. “We are committed to promoting the cause of literacy and we hope that families from all over the UK come to the Get Reading festival on July 13 for a fantastic day of events featuring some top authors and celebrities.”

The Get Reading campaign is a partnership between Nook and the London Evening Standard and aims to help improve literacy in schools.

Working closely with the Beanstalk literacy charity, Barnes & Noble has already donated 1000 of its Nook Simple Touch eReaders to the Get Reading campaign pre-loaded with children’s books.

The Nook Simple Touch eReaders are also available at a discounted price for the Get Reading festival, and can now be purchased for just £29.

HTC One Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update hits UK

The eagerly awaited HTC One Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update has started to roll out across UK based iterations of the flagship phone, the manufacturer has confirmed.

With a European release having kicked off earlier this month, HTC has now announced that UK based users of its flagship phone can now download the eagerly awaited HTC One Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update. There is currently no word as to when American owners of the quad-core Samsung Galaxy S4 rival will benefit from the latest rendition of Google’s hugely popular Android mobile operating system.

Confirmed via Twitter as being UK bound, the new HTC One Android 4.2.2 update sees users benefit from a selection of new lock screen widgets, the new Android Daydream wallpaper and a variety of new quick settings options.

Speaking via the official HTC UK Twitter feed, a company spokesperson stated: "The 4.2.2. update for the #HTCOne started rolling out in the UK from today. Download it now: Settings > About > Software Updates > Check now."

More than just a stock Android update, the arrival of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean for the HTC One sees the Taiwanese manufacturer bring a number of HTC Sense UI improvements, with Instagram added to Blinkfeed and a battery percentage indicator making an arrival. A further addition sees Google Now accessible simply by swiping up from the home key.

While not all HTC One owners can yet make use of the update, with a complete rollout expected to take some time, those with access will be able to find the over-the-air software patch in the ‘Software updates’ section of the phone’s settings menus.

HTC One Features

One of the most impressive smartphones on the market today, the HTC One pairs a stunning 4.7-inch 1080p Full HD display with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM.

Benefitting from a stunningly finished brushed metal form factor, the HTC One pairs a 4-ultrapixel rear-mounted camera with a secondary snapper up front and stereo Boomsound speakers on the handset’s fore. It features 32GB of internal storage.

iPad mini 2 release date may be pushed back, down to Retina display

The iPad mini 2 may be delayed if Apple adopts a Retina-style screen for the small tablet, according to fresh reports.

Apple has nailed down exactly what the iPad 5 will be like, but has not yet decided whether to update the iPad mini with a Retina screen, according to DigiTimes.

The site writes that if Apple decides to use a high pixel density screen, the iPad mini 2 is likely to be delayed until “the end of the fourth quarter” – as opposed to being released alongside the iPad 5 in September.

DigiTimes appears certain that the iPad 5 will land in September, citing sourced “from the upstream supply chain”.

As reported elsewhere, the site writes that the full-size iPad will feature a slimmed-down screen bezel, as well as improved battery life.

All these nuggets come with a pretty serious caveat – they come from DigiTimes. The site is one of the most Apple notorious rumour-pedlars on the internet, and many of its predications and assertions turn out to be less than entirely accurate.

iPad mini 2 Retina reports

In June 2013, NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim claimed that a Retina version of the 7.9-inch tablet will not arrive until 2014.

However, further conflicting reports are not hard to find. Also in June 2013, ETNews reported that Samsung would produce the display panels for Apple’s 2013 tablets, including a Retina iPad mini 2 screen.

The claimed panel is a 7.9-inch screen like the current model, but has a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels rather than 1,024 x 768.

This is the same resolution as the iPad 4, which would give the iPad mini 2 an impressive pixel density of 324 ppi.

That is roughly the same density as the iPhone 5, although pixel density in tablets tends to be far lower than that of the top mobile phones.

Angry Birds Star Wars prequel teased for July 15 launch

Rovio has released a teaser picture for an entirely new Angry Birds Star Wars game, potentially a prequel instalment.

Fans of the mobile and social gaming series can expect an entirely new Angry Birds Star Wars game, and by the looks of the newly release teaser picture it could be a Star Wars Episode 1 remake in the true Angry Birds’ style.

“Attention Angry Birds fans! Stay tuned on Monday, July 15, for big news about a brand new game!", reads a Rovio blog post. "We’re talking the biggest character line-up ever, awesome new powers, and maybe even a few surprises!”

Potentially merging all of the Star Wars prequel into one whopper Angry Birds game, Rovio’s teaser picture strongly resembles the Star Wars Episode 1 film poster. The image shows an Angry Bird Anakin Skywalker representation and his shadow morphing into a slightly porcine-looking Darth Vader silhouette.

“Big new game announcement coming on Monday! #July15” tweeted Rovio from the official Angry Birds twitter account.

Angry Birds fans could see bird version of characters like Padme Amidala and Jar Jar Binks, the latter a potentially very comedic addition to the series.

On the piggy side of the force, Darth Maul and General Grevious are both bound to make appearances.

Back in June, Rovio launched a teaser trailer for Angry Birds Go!, what looked to be a racing game version of the popular bird catapulting series.

However, we have yet to hear more about the racing title, which could potentially incorporate endless-runner elements such as Temple Run and its sequel Temple Run 2.

Ofcom opens 4G door for O2, Three and Vodafone to go hard on 4G

Ofcom has today confirmed that it will be liberalising various mobile spectrums, allowing carriers to choose which service they run on them.

This means that 4G and now be rolled out on the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, and gives networks the choice of which service to run on particular bands - be it 2G, 3G or 4G.

The reason for this decision is that it will remove regulatory barriers and allow the latest mobile technology to be deployed as quickly as possible.

No more hoops

It also removes the need for carriers to go through any further processes when it comes to moving 4G technology onto the new bands, as well as being able to extend the reach of their 4G services.

This is good news for the likes of O2, Three and Vodafone, who are all playing catch up to EE - currently the only network in the UK which offers 4G at the moment, but who will also benefit from the move.

We already knew this liberalisation was on the cards as Ofcom proposed the plan back in February after Vodafone and Hutchison 3G (parent company of Three) requested bands become free to aid 4G advancement.

SanDisk 64GB Extreme Released - Fastest microSDXC card in the world

SanDisk has officially unveiled what it claims is the world’s fastest microSDXC memory card, the SanDisk Extreme 64GB.

The SanDisk Extreme 64GB is the largest-capacity model in the company’s microSD range, and uses the ultra-high-capacity microSDXC standard.

The card is rated for write speeds of up to 50MB/sec and read speeds of up to 80MB/second.

Far surpassing the Speed Class 10 SD standard, which ensures read/write speeds of 10MB/second, the SanDisk Extreme 64GB also meets the UHS Speed Class 1, which is designed to ensure you can record 4K video happily.

The card is also waterproof and shockproof, although virtually any microSD card will survive being dunked in water.

The SanDisk Extreme 64GB takes over from the SanDisk Ultra 64GB as the top-capacity, high-speed small memory card on the company’s books. That card is rated for transfer speeds of up to 30MB/sec, making the Extreme model significantly quicker.

Although 64GB microSD memory cards have been available since 2011, this remains the storage limit.

At the Extreme 64GB card’s launch, SanDisk marketing manager Ruben Dennenwaldt said the company is working on the next level of storage – 128GB – and is currently “making very good progress.”

Prices for the SanDisk Extreme 64GB have not yet been posted on SanDisk’s UK website, but the range tops out at $200 in the US.

If speed is more important to you than storage, SanDisk also offers an Extreme Pro range, which offers write/read speeds of 90/95MB/sec.

However, Extreme Pro cards only come in 16GB and 8GB capacities in the microSD form.

LG Optimus G2 rumoured to have 5.2-inch display and optical image stabilisation

More LG Optimus G2 specification rumours have emerged, including the suggestion that the super-slim smartphone will come with a larger-than-expect display and some advanced camera tech.

Greek website Techblog carries the reports the that LG Optimus G2 will exceed the 5-inch display size most had expected. According to slightly questionable "unconfirmed information," the forthcoming smartphone will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p LCD IPS screen.

It's suggested that the phone's extremely small bezel means that a slight increase in screen size is possible without making the phone's body any bigger.

Another interesting new spec rumour from the same source is that the LG Optimus G2's 13-megapixel camera will feature optical image stabilisation (OIS). This is a feature that's only just starting to make its way into phones, allowing for steadier shots and videos and opening up the potential for markedly superior low light shots.

It's thanks to OIS that the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC One are such strong performers in low light conditions.

Otherwise, we know from a leaked promotional video and earlier rumours that the LG G2 will feature an unusual rear-mounted volume control setup. This is apparently in reaction to the fact that the phone will be extremely thin.

We also know for a fact that the LG Optimus G2 will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU. LG and Qualcomm issued a joint statement revealing as much last month.

Apple to investigate death of woman using a charging iPhone 5

Apple has confirmed it will work with authorities to help investigate the death of a Chinese woman who was reportedly electrocuted whilst using her charging iPhone 5.

Speaking this morning, Apple has stated that following the death of Ma Ailun on Thursday, it will look to investigate any faults with the smartphone which could have led to the incident. The company failed to address any potential problems with the iPhone 5.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family,” an official spokesperson for the iPad mini manufacturer stated. “We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter."

Ma, a 23-year-old flight attendant with China Southern Airlines who hailed from the western Xinjiang region of China, is said to have died after receiving an electric shock whilst attempting to answer a call on her charging iPhone 5. China’s Xinhua news agency has quote police officers in the region as confirming the reports.

Following the accident, Ma’s sister sent out a Tweet stating the woman had collapsed and died after using her iPhone 5 while it charged. She urged other smartphone owners to be careful when using their own devices. It is not currently known if Ma was using the official Apple charger with her phone or a third party imitation.

The saddening news comes as an Abu Dhabi based woman claims her Samsung Galaxy S4 caught fire while on charge.

“I cannot explain to you my extreme frustration, disappointment and extreme fear when I found my brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 burning at the charger connection to the phone,” S4 owner Sarah Shurrub said in a complaint to Samsung following the alleged incident.

She added: “The phone was found burning, while charging. It’s only thanks to God that I woke up in the middle of the night and controlled the burning before it could cause damage to my home and family.”

Vodafone hides crafty PAYG price hike behind 'simplified' per-minute charges

Vodafone has angered its UK customers by announcing a switch from per-second to per-minute call charges, which are likely to cost subscribers more money.

From August 1, the Guardian reports, if a Vodafone pay as you go customer makes a call to a landline or mobile lasting, for example, 1:02, they will be charged for the two minutes.

In real terms that means a call that previously cost 26p will now cost 50p - a 92 per cent price hike.

The struggling operator is, of course, dressing this up as a benefit for its subscribers, claiming the simplified charges will help users know exactly how many minutes they have left in their accounts.
Gee. Thanks, guys!

Straightforward price hike

A post on the Vodafone website reads: "Calls on Pay as you go are getting simpler from 1 August 2013. No more complicated pricing by the second – just clear, straightforward per minute charges.

"So if your call is a minute and 37 seconds long, it'll be charged as two minutes. That way, you'll always know exactly how many minutes you have left."

Posters on the Vodafone support forum called the move "patronising," while others accused the network of insulting the intelligence of its customers.

One post read: "Please don't patronise us. This is being introduced to make more money for Vodafone, pure and simple. It doesn't make anything simpler other than the fact that PAYG customers will essentially pay more for calls."

Are you a Vodafone customer affected by the transition to per-minute call billing? Feel free to vent your spleen in the comments section below.

Moto X release date and features revealed by official video leak

An official video from Canadian network provider Rogers has prematurely revealed the Moto X release date and some of its major new features.

The Moto X release date has been set for next month, with the Motorola flagship touching down in August playing host to a whole range of voice command features.
The leaked video appears to show a number of unique Moto X features, including the ability to speak to the phone without touching it.

It looks to be an expansion of the existing Google Now function, but without the need to physically interact with your phone. It reveals that the Moto X will always be listening out for vocal prompts within its hands-free mode.

In the demonstration, a Rogers representative simply says "OK Google Now" before asking for today's weather forecast, and the Moto X at her side responds.

Apparently the Moto X is "ready to listen and respond," and it also "learns your voice" - a feature that Engadget has learned, through another leaked video, is set to be called Open Mic.

Another useful Moto X feature that this leaked video reveals is its ability to provide "active updates." Meant as an intelligent alternative to those dumb blinking notification lights, which don't tell you anything, the Moto X will subtly flash up the nature of the incoming notification without fully waking from sleep.

Finally, the video showcases the Moto X's advanced sensor usage. Here, we see that you can activate the camera by holding the phone and twisting your wrist twice.

It's still no replacement for proper physical shutter button activation (as seen on Windows Phone devices), but it could prove easier to activate in a hurry than the current touch-driven solution favoured by Android manufacturers.

BlackBerry OS 10.2 leaks, lets you reply to messages from notifications

BlackBerry 10 users, have you been dreaming of the day that you get Wi-Fi Direct compatibility and souped up notifications?

Because we have excellent news, if so. Some leaked screen grabs of BlackBerry OS 10.2 show that both of those features are en route to your BB10 device.

The screen grabbed leaks hit the Crackberry forums (of course) and brought with them news of 'actionable notifications' which is a horrible way of saying that you can reply to messages and that kind of thing from within notifications instead of having to spend precious seconds opening the messaging app.

Sharing and caring

Wi-Fi Direct, meanwhile, allows users to share bits and pieces between devices over Wi-Fi, but without needing to go through a router or an established Wi-Fi network - similar to Bluetooth.

Other new bits and pieces include a native Evernote app (oooh!), an upgraded settings app (aaah!) and a better app manager (swoon).

As for when the software will launch, your guess is as good as ours. One thing's for sure though, it's not coming to the PlayBook.

How to expose a Twitter fraud? It's all about the time of day and how often you receive Tweets

The timing of tweets is the major clue as to whether they are authentic or not, new research suggests.

Scientists determined the difference between human tweeters and automated Twitter accounts based solely on the timing of tweets.

The researchers, from Imperial College London, found that they could easily tell if humans were responsible for tweets, without even looking at their content, based on when the user’s tweet was posted.

Their technique also enabled them to distinguish between individuals and those accounts managed by groups of people.

Surprisingly, they found that there was not an obvious pattern for automated Twitter accounts, which were more random than humans in terms of the timing of tweets.

The technology behind the research could provide a new way to verify the authenticity of Twitter account users.

The study, published in the journal PloS One, is also providing fresh insights into how our brains operate when using social media tools.

Study author Doctor Aldo Faisal, said: 'We found that it does not matter whether you are a model in Sao Paulo or a student in Beijing; it seems that we all share something very similar in our tweeting pattern that dictates the timing of when we send out messages.

'Why is this important to know? Well, it suggests that there is something fundamentally similar in the wiring of our brains that comes into play when we use twitter to communicate.'

Since its creation in 2006, Twitter has accrued more than 200 million active users worldwide, producing 400 million tweets per day.

The researchers analysed 160,000 tweets from around the world using computer programmes that they developed to spot complex behavioural patterns in Twitter users.

By analysing the timing interval between tweets the team were able to determine that personal accounts holders tweeted more evenly throughout the week and, on each day, more tweets were recorded during typical waking hours of 7am to midnight.

Managed accounts, run by people in corporations, were more active during the five working days and during working hours between 8am and 8pm.

However, tweets from automated accounts were less easy to predict using their method because they were random in terms of when they were sent out.

Dr Faisal added: 'I am a Twitter user and this project was born out of my curiosity in wanting to know who I’m actually tweeting with.

'Sure, there are methods for verifying account holders, but are they fail-safe methods? Are we really speaking to a Member of Parliament on Twitter or a PR representative or a machine? We have now developed a method that can help us determine who it is we are actually tweeting with.'

Moto X caught on video and with Eric Schmidt

Update: After the Moto X was spotted in a video earlier today, the upcoming Motorola smartphone has also been papped being used by Eric Schmidt.
The Google chief executive was snapped using the unknown Motorola smartphone that looks exceedingly similar to the leaked rear shot of the Moto X that emerged earlier and can be seen below.

What's new in the shot of Schmidt with the Moto X is the checkerboard effect on the rear of the smartphone.

It looks like the smartphone's rear panel will be made from a solid, matte plastic rather than the shiny version adopted by smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 that cheapens the feel of the handset.

Original Story:

The Moto X has been caught on video in the hands of a top Motorola executive showcasing the smartphone in the flesh for the first time.

The video was posted on Robert Scoble’s Google Plus account and was taken at an exclusive gathering organised by new Motorola employee Guy Kawasaki, previously thought to be the official launch of the Moto X before that rumour was debunked by Motorola.

In his video of the party he filmed using Google Glass, Scoble managed to catch the Moto X in the hands of the Senior Vice President for Product Management at Motorola, Rick Osterloh.

Now, while we only get a brief glimpse of the Moto X the smartphone seen does tally with the Moto X phone images leaked earlier this month that also showed the rear of the device.

It also looks to have the same curved rear back that is showcased in the latest leaked picture of a fully assembled Moto X that emerged today and is included below.

It has quite a large camera sensor, a flash and below that an embossed Motorola M logo. It also seems to have a rubberised matte finish on the rear, complementing the gloss plastic front panel of the device spotted in the Moto X Clear Pixel camera spec leak.

The Moto X is tipped to have a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768p resolution display, powered by a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU.

Potentially running a very close to stock version of Android 4.3, the Moto X is said to focus on innovative software features to separate it from competitors.

Motorola has already confirmed the existence of the Moto X, the company’s upcoming flagship, and has said it will be the “first smartphone that you can design yourself.”

As of yet we’re not quite sure what that means, but could provide users with a basis body smartphone akin to the Google Nexus 4 that they can then customise the case of.

Red HTC One goes on sale in the UK

A ‘Glamour Red’ HTC One has gone on sale in the UK, with retailer Phones 4u exclusively offering the brightly hued handset.

Formally unveiled last month, the red HTC One joins the original black and silver toned renditions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 rival and features the same high-end array of specs just in a new, more vibrant brushed aluminium shell.

“Phones 4u has a proven track record of securing colour handsets exclusives for our customers and we’re extremely excited to be working with HTC to offer them this exclusive opportunity to own the HTC One in Red,” Scott Hooton, CCO at Phones 4u said in announcing the UK exclusive last month.

Philip Blair, President of EMEA at HTC added: “The new HTC One in Glamour Red showcases the power of our flagship model in a colour that demands attention, whilst maintaining the high standard set for sophisticated design and build quality.”

Offering the eye-catching phone on a variety of networks and tariffs, Phones 4u has confirmed that the red HTC One will be available on EE, Vodafone, T-Mobile, and Orange.

Available for free on a £38 per month, two year contract, the red HTC One will come paired with 2GB of monthly data, unlimited calls and unlimited texts.

A true powerhouse of the smartphone scene, the HTC One runs a 4.7-inch, 1080p Full HD display alongside a speedy 1.7GHz quad-core CPU and Google’s Android Jelly Bean OS. With a 4-UltraPixel rear-mounted camera, the HTC One specs sheet is rounded off by the HTC Sense 5.0 UI and a second, 2-megapixel snapper up front.

Budget iPhone reportedly leaks again in multiple colours

It has long been suggested that Apple's so-called 'budget' iPhone will arrive in a range of colours and a number of purported leaked photos have emerged in the last week to back that up.

Those leaks were supplemented on Wednesday by Apple enthusiast SonyDickson on Twitter, who posted a photo showcasing the purported plastic device in various colours.

The post follows multiple reports and leaks that have showcased the rear casing of the device. Each time the snaps have depicted the device in shades of yellow, pink, green and blue as well as white.

Although there's little to corroborate the authenticity of the photos, the appearance of different snaps from different sources, should be noted.

Previous leaks from, the NowhereElse blog and the Taiwanese Apple Daily site over the last week all showcase the same colours, while the Apple logo and iPhone name tag appears in the same position, helping to lessen the possibility of fakes.

Apple is certainly no stranger to livening up the look of its devices with a bright splash of colour. Most of its recent iPod lines have been available in a range of vibrant hues.

It has also been suggested by some observers that the multiple bright colours reflect the new design aesthetic of the new, Jony Ive-influenced iOS 7 design.

Confirmation one way or the other is likely to come before the year is out, probably at a special Apple event in around September or early October where we expect to see the iPhone 5S/iPhone 6 revealed.

iPhone 6 release date, news, rumours and price

There are few, if any, products in the world that spark as much consumer interest and press coverage than an update to the iPhone. The next iPhone is on its way but will it be called the iPhone 6, or the iPhone 5S?

The question on everyone's lips is will it be an iterative update using the same chassis as the iPhone 5, just like the iPhone 4S was to the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS was to the iPhone 3G.

Besides wanting to know whether the iPhone 6 will be coming this year, many of the questions surrounding the iPhone 6 launch include whether it’ll get BlackBerry Messenger, whether it’ll get a bigger screen and whether it will follow in the footsteps of Sony’s Xperia Z and be waterproof.
Some of the most fanciful rumours making the rounds centre on the iPhone 6 having a projector, being transparent and having a hologramatic screen. It’s highly unlikely any of these will transpire in the next iteration of the iPhone but concepts and patents filed by Apple fuel the rumours.

We’ll be updating this article regularly but here’s everything we know about the iPhone 6 so far, including how it'll differ from the iPhone 5.

iPhone 6 release date

Apple is sure to unveil its next iPhone later this year. Since 2007 when the first iPhone was released, every year has seen a new iPhone outed.

The release schedule of previous iPhones shows a very clear pattern too – Apple plans its launches with incredible precision.

iPhone – June 2007
iPhone 3G – July 2008
iPhone 3GS – June 2009
iPhone 4 – June 2010
iPhone 4S – October 2011
iPhone 5 – September 2012

The early days of the iPhone series were all about summer launches, but these days Apple has skipped a few months back. Its last two phones were unveiled in September or October.

And, naturally, we’re highly unlikely to see an iPhone 6 arrive in July given we’re already in the thick of it. A September launch is likely.

A July release date was speculated earlier in the year, the source being a leaked document from a Japanese network, but that just goes to show you can never trust rumours.

The first we hear of the Apple launch is likely to be when the invites go out, which could be as late as two weeks before the event itself. However, previous Apple events have been revealed after having their venue booking details leaked. We’ll be back as soon as any such leaks happen.

The next iPhone will launch alongside iOS 7, which was revealed at WWDC 2013 in June, again pointing towards a possible mid-September unveil – Apple says it’ll arrive in the ‘Fall’.

However, if the next iPhone turns out to be the iPhone 5S, it’s likely that we’ll have to wait until 2014 to see the iPhone 6.

That said, there is a third possibility. Some suggest that the long-rumoured ‘low-cost’ iPhone will be called the iPhone 5S, and that the next full-fat iPhone will be the iPhone 6. In that case, both may launch this year.

However, this creates some most un-Apple-like series continuity issues – namely that the iPhone 5 would have higher-end construction than the iPhone 5S.

iPhone 6 price

Apple has a strict approach to pricing. It almost never cuts its prices mid-cycle, only lowering prices when an iPhone goes from being the ‘current’ model to an older legacy phone.

It’s not into doing anything that’ll devalue its products.

This policy is likely to mean the next iPhone costs roughly the same amount as the current one – which starts at £529 for the 16GB model.

The price escalates to £599 for the 32GB model and £699 for the 64GB phone.

iPhone 6 specs

When assessing a phone’s power, there are three main elements to consider – the CPU, the GPU and the RAM.

In pure figures terms, Apple’s iOS series CPUs have never sounded that impressive. They stuck to dual-core chips while Android rivals moved onto quad-core CPUs, but they have actually been quiet trailblazing of late.

The iPhone 5’s A6 processor uses a custom system architecture rather than the ‘off the shelf’ type seen in the vast majority of phones.

However, as our Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5 feature showed, Apple needs to play catch-up in this area. The iPhone 6 is likely to feature a quad-core processor, rumoured to be clocked at 1.2GHz. 2GB of RAM is also likely.

This would make the iPhone 6 the very first quad-core Apple mobile device. At present, the most powerful in the iOS family is the iPad 4, which stuck with a dual-core main processor.

However, it is rumoured that the iPhone 6 will use the same GPU – the graphics chip – as the iPad 4, the PowerVR SGX554MP4.

This may sound like a disappointing improvement given the iPad 4 was released in 2012, but consider the difference in screen resolution – the iPad 4 screen has over 3 million pixels, the iPhone 5 under one million.

A lower-resolution screen needs less power to render visuals of the same perceived quality.

iPhone 6 Colours

One of the most interesting changes we’ll see in the next-generation iPhone is the introduction of a bit of colour. Claimed leaked prototypes suggest we’ll see five colours, including green, blue, pink and yellow.

Colour joined the Apple family – which has traditionally been all about black, white and silver – with the last iPod touch. You can get the aluminium rear of the music player cast in more-or-less the same shades we expect to see in the next iPhone.

This was only really made possible by the design switcheroo made by the iPhone 5. The previous two generations of iPhones prior to this one were topped with glass on both sides, and creating colour editions would have been a serious manufacturing challenge. Now that the rear of the phone is aluminium, colour editions will be much easier to produce.

However, there have been suggestions that the papped colourful iPhones are the long-rumoured ‘budget’ iPhone.

iPhone 6 software

If the iPhone 6 arrives in 2013 rather than 2014, the phone will definitely run iOS 7. This software was unveiled in June and will power all new iOS devices following its release alongside the next iPhone.

Although the software is not publically available, it has already been released to developers. We know exactly what it looks and feels like already.

iOS 7 is Jonathan Ive’s redesign of the system – he was at the helm of the design team for most of Apple’s iconic products including the iPod and MacBook.

A new look is one of the most important changes. Icons are sharp rather than rounded and other aspects of the interface have taken some cues from Android.

For example, the drop-down notifications menu gives you control over phone features.

However, the system still doesn’t offer home screen widgets, which are what many iOS detractors have been asking for.

iPhone 6 screen

One of the most speculated-about elements of the iPhone 6 is its screen. Will it be bigger? Will it be higher-resolution?

In early 2013, there were rumours that Apple was planning to release two phone in 2013 – a 4-inch phone and a larger 4.8-inch one, the latter most likely to be dubbed ‘iPhone 6’.

iLounge’s Jeremy Horwitz clarified the rumours with his own sources, saying that while a 4.7-inch device was in prototyping stage, it’s “certainly not expected in 2013.”

Horwitz wrote in January that the iPhone 5S will arrive in 2013, will have a 4-inch screen like the iPhone 5.

It is also possible that the next-generation iPhones will use Sharp IGZO screens rather than the Sharp IPS displays used in the iPhone 5. These offer more efficient power consumption than the current type.

iPhone 6 camera

The next iPhone is likely to use a Sony camera sensor similar to those seen in the Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4, if the iPhone 6 is to follow the series’s current direction.

Both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 use an 8-megapixel Sony sensor – much as people may think Apple only uses its own components, it does not. Using the same sensor for three generations of iPhones is highly unlikely.

Most of this year’s top phones, including the Galaxy S4, use 13-megapixel Sony-manufactured camera sensors.

The two most notable exceptions are the 8.7MP Nokia Lumia 925 and HTC One, but both of those use rather different technologies to make their cameras stand out.

It’s unlikely that the iPhone 6 will make the same moves. The iPhone 6 is likely to be too slim to fit in the OIS components needed to copy the Lumia 925, and using a low-resolution, high pixel pitch sensor like the HTC One’s is a move that could misfire marketing-wise.

We expect the iPhone 6 to use a higher-resolution sensor and a familiar LED flash. Improvements in image quality are likely to be down to an improvement in lens construction and better noise reduction algorithms in the camera’s software.

There are clear improvements to be made in the iPhone 5’s camera lens too. It’s a reasonable f/2.2 construction, but beaten by several others these days, including the F/1.9 Lumia 720 and f/2.0 HTC One.

These figures are the cameras’ f-stop rating, which is the ratio between the diameter of the lens aperture and the focal length of the lens. The lower the figure the better – indicating that it’ll let in more light within the same exposure time, therefore giving the potential for faster shooting in good light and better low-light performance in gloomy situations.

iPhone 6 rumours

The rumour mill is always flying around the launch of another iPhone but what are the rumours to look out for?

Fingerprint scanner

The integration of a fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 6 has been heavily rumoured. Apple patents suggest it could be hidden within the phone's bezel.

Plastic iPhone

Could the iPhone 6 be made of plastic? Not likely but there are plenty of rumours suggesting a budget iPhone may be launched on the same release date as the iPhone 6.

Summer release date

In June pics of the iPhone 6 or 5S were reportedly snapped on a production line. If that's the case and production is already underway we could see an early release date in August.

iPhone 6 – Worth the Upgrade?

If we assume the iPhone 6 is to arrive this year, it’s unlikely to be a huge upgrade. All the rumours point to a sensible rather than hugely dynamic generational shift. We’ll get more power, a more advanced screen and updated software – although all recent iPhones will get the latter.

If the iPhone 6 is to land in 2014, it could well be a more dynamic device that, like the iPhone 5 did, changes the form of the device altogether by adding a larger screen. However, it’s too early to tell, especially given Apple is unlikely to have finalised the design of a product more than a year in advance.

Joey turns 11

Joey loves Minecraft these days, so naturally he wanted a minecraft cake. This is a "piece of dirt with grass on it" cake, and a diamond pickaxe and shovel on top. You'd have to be familiar with the game for any of that to make much sense. He loved it.

Same sort of pinata.

Which they had a blast destroying, as usual.

And I now have an 11-year old. I couldn't ask for a better kid.

Banana Bread

I have been thinking about banana bread because, long story short, I went grocery shopping and came home with 20 bananas. And I'm happy about that because I like bananas, especially with Rice Krispies, and I LOVE banana bread. Recently someone gave us some that was dry and flavorless, and I didn't know that not everyone has a great banana bread recipe. I'm pretty fond of mine because it tastes so good, it's easy, and it only requires 2 bananas. So I thought I'd share.

Banana Bread
2 C. flour
¾ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 ¼ C. sugar
Add:
1/3 C. shortening (or butter)
1 C. mashed bananas (2 large)
¼ C. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Beat 2 minutes. Add 2 large eggs. Beat 3 minutes. Bake in 2 small greased loaf tins at 350 for 35 minutes. I don't know if it's my oven or my baking tins, but I always have to cook it quite a bit longer. Like 45 or 50 mins. So cook it until a toothpick comes out clean, like a cake.
