Spent Grain Bread and Death

  Posted by Picasa

I've been lazy, and I haven't had much to say.

My computer at home is broken.

My maternal grandmother died, at the age of 90, on Good Friday.

It makes me frustrated and philosophical.
To shape that frustration into something tangible, I intend to build a table. It will be a big, 8-foot long table for the deck. The kind of table that is meant to be laden with food and surrounded by a big group of people. It will be a fitting memorial to my Grandma, who laid out countless holiday feasts and spent little time sitting down to eat them. Her concern was others' happiness.

My sister and her hubby came down for a visit. We hung out. We ate and drank. That's pretty much it. It was bliss. They brought me some spent grains from a batch of the absolutely sublime Howell at the Moon Stout which my brother-in-law made (with newly increased involvement on the part of my sister). It makes an excellent addition to bread.

In case anyone in Germany wants some.

That's NPR in the background talking about WWII Bulgarian tanks being found and put up for sale.

Oliver is quite mushy, and he was a shameless mooch last night when I made chicken for dinner.

Clean Dishes, a Happy Back and Organ Music

(listening to Louis Vierne's 5th Symphony for Organ, Op. 47)
I like doing dishes. I like having things clean and in their place (translation: I'm rather obsessive-compulsive about my kitchen), and the washing of dishes is a classic exercise of that impulse. I find it relaxing. I had finished washing some dishes after making pancakes for Lindsey and myself, and I was seized by an urge to take a picture of the drying rack. Towns and universities have often paid artists lots of money to create sculptures which turned out to be silly, ugly or overreaching, so I figured my sculpture of clean dishes was a better deal.
Various materials are represented: stainless steel, steel-cladded aluminum, porcelain, nylon plastic, borosilicate glass and enameled cast iron. Perhaps NC State will pay me $75,000 to put it in the middle of their library.
I'm giddy with joy at my back's recovery. I can get out of bed! I can stand upright! I can put on my own shoes! Back pain thwarts most expectations of a good day; never take a happy back for granted. That being said, I plan on going over to Durham today and wandering around a bit. I've lived in North Carolina for over two years, and I haven't visited Duke's campus yet. I want to see the chapel.
This evening, Lindz and I will be attending my employer's corporate holiday party. I work in a small outpost of a rather large company, so I will see lots of people who work at larger, more prestigious facilities. The basic points on corporate holiday parties:
1)Free food and drinks on The Man's dime
2)The opportunity to chat with coworkers whose company I enjoy, without being interrupted by work
3)The opportunity to watch people get drunk and disgrace themselves
4)The opportunity to appear at a social function with my lovely, successful and charming wife, which makes me look like a total stud
5)See #1
Today has the makings of a good Saturday. Lindz and I have already had more social interaction this week than we normally do; an alumni wine tasting on Thursday provided a lot of pleasant conversation and tasty wine. We met and exchanged phone numbers with a nice couple who have some things in common with us. We have become accustomed to a quiet, homebody life (although we complain of boredom sometimes), so it was unusual and exciting to find ourselves chatting and drinking with a bunch of young, interesting people until after midnight. We were tired the next day, and it was amusing to think of how we had done that sort of thing all the time in our previous lives. In college, it is unusual to not start partying by Thursday night at the least. We've allowed ourselves to be a bit sedentary and unsocial in our habits; perhaps we are coming around to a period of comparative extroversion. With my tendencies of enjoying dishwashing and organ music, I'm almost a nightclubbing rock star anyway.

Angelica's birthday

Today is August 13.  Four months ago, I was prepared to be in the hospital at this exact date, giving birth to our second baby daughter, Angelica.  God had other plans, and Angelica is now with Him in heaven.  But of course, I can't keep out the sadness of the what could have beens.  Like, I could have been holding this little girl in my arms now. Changing diapers and breastfeeding.  Life as I know it now may have been different.  But God had plans.  I am not questioning them of course.  I'm quite sure our little angel is watching over us now.  I did light a candle for her though.  For my sweet angel who's in heaven.
Happy, Happy birthday Angelica!

Jessica's Nursery

We got the Letter of Guarantee from the bank last night. Needless to say, after I send out the docs later to the sellers of the house, the next step would already be up to them. They need to transfer the title to us, and only then can we process the loan release, and finally the house and lot is ours. I'm just so excited to move it, and more so, to make Jessica's nursery a reality. I've already studied the room in my mind, and I've prepared what it would look like in my dreams, with the rubber mats in the whole room, and the toys on one side of the bedroom that she can simply grab whenever, and a hideaway gate so she won't be going out without supervision, and the bed mattress on one end so she can sleep there when she wants to. I'm just so full of ideas. and I really can't wait to implement them!

Pile o' Cheeks

It was a cruel irony that I was surrounded seafood in such profusion while setting a personal record for being the most miles from my kitchen. I imagine these cheeks would have been good prepared thusly: Pan-seared with a little dollop of chardonnay jelly, next to some asparagus risotto.

Realizations

sometimes it takes not so good experiences for us to realize the things we want in life. In my case the past 4 months have been humbling, and it made me realize, finally, what I actually want to do with my life. Even if its scary and is not a simple feat, I believe that I will actually feel better doing this that trying forever to fit into a corporate setting.

Yesterday I was chatting with a former supplier in my previous work, and entrepreneur who happened to make it big by starting young. I know that he was capable and hardworking and for sure he really made it there by sheer hard work. So we were chatting about what I wanted to do and he related to me his story of how he started out by sending 20 proposals a day coming from the yellow pages, to be able to network his own PR company. Which got me to thinking about what I really want to do, and how lucky I am over others that I also have a network working for me, and I believe that I am wise and smart enough to do this business.

After all, I fell in love with events management the day I started handling it. I always told me friends that this is something I wanted to do, and something I had passion for. The fact that I will be doing this full time just excites me. I'm planning to start small of course, small events first and learn the business. Get contacts. After I've gained enough experience I plan to venture into the more professional side of it, hopefully get into some good companies with upcoming events. Who knows maybe soon I can have clients that are the calibre of Nestle. We can never tell of course, but its where I want to be in the future.

Isn't that fun?

Stollen

(listening to "Don't Take your Guns to Town," Johnny Cash)
In the interest of being homey, domestic and Christmas-like, and to uphold old German traditions, I made stollen:

("The Ballad of Ira Hayes," Johnny Cash)
It's bigger, uglier and more decadent than the stollen that my recently departed grandmother used to make. Just like me. Nevertheless, I'm pleased with how it came out. I used candied pineapple, mixed candied fruits and toasted walnuts in there. Stollen is a thing that varies, so I made my own version of it.

Castillo-Sy Wedding

Yesterday Hubby and I attended the wedding of Anj and Lester, Anj being one of my closest friends in Nestle and Les her boyfriend of two years, whom she also met at Nestle. We were witness to their two years of great love which was full of surprises. Lester actually made great effort in coming up with a proposal for Anj, when he asked for her hand in marriage after finishing the ironman race in Camsur, with the cheesy proposal line of "Andrea, will you be my finish line?".  That took their love story to various media: Balitang K, Sports Unlimited and even Weddings Magazine. Ahahaha....
More than 6 months after, they got married at St. Rita de Cascia and reception followed at the Crowne Plaza in Ortigas. It was a fun reception, with quite a few not so ordinary gimmiks, and truly veering away from the traditionals, while still displaying the love from family and friends and giving that wedding its own original touch. They had at least 5 AVP's shown throughout the program, from the start of their love story to the beginning of their new life together. It was truly one of the most unique weddings I have been to. And I am so happy for them. I wish for them to keep the love overflowing and keep the surprises coming.
Love you Anj and Les! Congrats on your new life together!

Beauty treatment

I love long weekends! It gives me a chance to do the stuff I want, and also do some beauty treatments for myself. For the past few days I've been able to take long, leasurely baths without thinking of time (weekdays I shower for 10 minutes max!). Which means I still get to apply lotion all over, and this afternoon I was able to apply a facial mask to reguvenate the skin. I don't need acne cream at the moment, as I'm not really acne prone, but I enjoy putting some stuff to help my skin look younger on occasions when I have the luxury of time. At least for the next three days for this weekend, I get to pamper myself, even for a while.

Midweek - I want to destress!

Its only Wednesday and yet I feel like its been a long week and I can't wait for it to be over.  My Monday and Tuesday were really heavy days at work so today I just had to forget all the stress and (almost) did not any work done.  Well, part of it was having dinner with friends on a Tuesday night and getting home at 11pm to find Jess still up and wanting to play, so I really slept at past 12 already and woke up at 6am to cook food for the day.  Stress! At work I barely got anything done simply because I was way to tired to think.  My mind just hibernated.
So I'm on my way to bed now.  I got a bit of work done on the bazaar but I'm just not up to do any flyers designing this evening when I'm still on sleep mode. Hopefully tomorrow.

Potatoes, a Recipe and the Workplace

(listening to "Paragon Rag" by Scott Joplin)

This is a lot of potatoes (15 or 16 pounds). I'm baking them for work. A coworker thought it would be cool to have a baked potato bar as a change from the typical pot luck. I was nominated to do it, so people chipped in some money for the supplies. I rendered a nice pile of bacon bits, steamed some broccoli, and chopped some chives. I also have a huge tub of sour cream, tubs of whipped butter, and some cans of chili. Loaded spuds will be had by all, and I even got a Trader Joe's pepper grinder (pre-ground pepper is worthless. It is a close relative to sawdust). My oven is full of big russets right now.

My brother wanted to know more about the food in the previous post. The prosciutto-wrapped tilapia in the previous post was very simple and very good. I put a piece of prosciutto on the cutting board. Then, a tilapia filet. Then, another piece of prosciutto. I rolled it up and decided to wrap another piece of prosciutto around it. I stuck a bamboo skewer through it. I might normally bake this, but I like to use the grill during summer to keep the cooking heat outside of the house. Lindz had mentioned asparagus earlier in the day, so I got some at the store. I tossed the 'sparagus with a bit of canola oil, salt & pepper, balsamic vinegar and maple syrup (all told, just enough liquids to coat the asparagus and leave a modest puddle in the Pyrex dish). I put the asparagus on the lower level of the grill, and the tilapia above it. I have a rectangular stainless grill grate doohickie that helped prevent lost asparagus. It all didn't take very long, and I was pleased with how all the flavors went together.

And now, some contemplation about work that might get some interesting comments:

I don't miss working for Starbucks. Retail sucks ass. My current workplace does indeed resemble Office Space, but a great many others do, too. Sometimes I get philosophical about what I'm supposed to do with my life; I come up with various ways of beating myself up for not having a more exciting, lucrative or noble job than I do. I've gotten the idea in my head that it's something to with my DNA. I am a Midwestern boy, of German descent and raised as a Lutheran. As such, I think that this has made me:
1)punctual
2)hardworking
3)not a vegetarian
4)a lover of beer
5)addicted to security and predictability
6)mortally afraid of not preparing enough food for a meal
7)a diligent pantry manager, always ensuring that it would take a nuclear war and years of subsequent anarchy to make me run out of canned corn or plastic wrap
8)unable and/or unwilling to sell myself to others. I loathe job hunting more than anything in the world. More than gargling bleach. More than being rubbed vigorously all over with a cheese grater and then being dipped in hot sauce.

My loving, devoted wife and I had a lengthy, beer-lubricated conversation about this the other night at our local bar. She does not subscribe to my theory that my magical inability to make lots of money and love doing it is due to my DNA. Still, I wonder: the anthropological and socioeconomic ground from which I sprang is suited to doing okay in adversity, not thriving in prosperity. I am descended from farmers, not captains of industry. My people don't think outside the box; they ensure that it is a good, strong box with all perfect 90-degree angles. As such, my people are the people you want to be during The Great Depression.

Anyway, there are a hell of a lot of people out there who make a lot of money. In many cases, they are stupid, rude, self-entitled and lacking in integrity. Many of them are not those things. Is there really such an easy explanation? Various members and friends of my wife's extended family (none of whom are Midwestern German-Americans) are hugely wealthy, notable people. They're good people, not thieves.

I am fiercely proud of my heritage, and I could not possibly love my family more than I do. But when baked potatoes are the most exciting thing going on at the office, I have to wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

Meet the MAC OS Lion X

Ok, I'm not quite sure which comes first or last between these 3: OS Lion X.  Whichever it is I don't really care. Anyhow, I'm quite happy and satisfied.  When we bought Macky the other week I knew we were automatically qualified for an upgrade to the Lion OS X, since what is installed in the laptops are still the leopard versions.  The guy from PowerMac told us it generally takes around 2 weeks, so I was really happy when I got the email last night that gave the password for me to download the free upgrade (a $29.99 deal in iTunes!).  It was a whopping 3GB that had to be downloaded and I was getting up in the middle of the night.  I almost didn't get to finish the download this morning, luckily it did and I was able to install it before I went to the office.  I'm so far happy with it, like shifting from a Windows XP to a Windows 7 (pardon the comparison, but its the simplest way to say it!).  I've yet to learn all the other perks of this new OS, but so far I'm liking it.  In the scheme of things though, in so far as Mac expertise is concerned, I'd say I'm 5 out of 10! Lots to learn still!!!!

Bookshelves

We like books. For several years, our books have lived on some cheap shelves from Target.

I took some time off from my pointless coma of a job so I could build some real shelves. It was a good old sweaty, sawdusty experience.

Here are the first two of the three units in place.

Here they are, coated in extra-fumy enamel paint. Lindz and I got a good buzz off of that.

It's hard to truly realize the change in appearance from this picture. The shelves are seven feet tall, about nine feet wide, and eight inches deep. They occupy almost the entirety of one wall. They're made of real wood, not glued sawdust, and they didn't travel here from the other side of the world! What a concept!

A Fine Little Corner of the World

(listening to "Wild Hearted Son" by the Cult)
We stayed at The Rock House in Negril, on the western tip of Jamaica.

  Posted by Picasa

This is the view from our breakfast table at the resort's restaurant:

And this little bridge view is a short stroll away:

This banana tree is in front of one of the cabanas:

This little grotto is literally underneath where we often sat for our meals at the restaurant. The ladder makes it easy to go for a dip in the warm, salty, unbelievably clear water. I wished I had an underwater camera; the snorkeling was great.

Here are Lindz's toes. I have provided the Caribbean Sea in the background for size comparison. Lindz's feet are smaller. This is where we spent many a happy hour reading and drinking.

Saving on Electricity (Meralco Woes)

We got our electricity bill last Friday, and I must say, we're bordering on panic on electricity spending! With the hot summer days its so hard to scrimp say, on electric fan costs just to avoid some costs. We live in a house with complete appliances so while our electricity spending is not too much, I won't says its the least bit cheap.
First thing we did was to clean our air conditioning unit. Admittedly we're quite stubborn when it comes to maintaining the A/C unit and we haven't had it professionally cleaned since we bought it in 2005. And we did feel that's its due for some cleaning because the room is not as cold anymore even with a temp of 19degC.  What we did is take out the AC from the case, wrapped up the electronics parts in plastic (the timer/controls), and then hosed down the tubes and the body with water.  Its such a good thing that water pressure is good from where we live and we have a great water hose that adjusts the pressure of water so its easy to take out the dirt. After cleaning we left the A/C outside under the sun to dry it completely.  We installed it back after lunch but we didn't test it till the evening, since its the only time we actually do use the A/C. Oftentimes its quite breezy here even if its too hot, so we really don't need the A/C anyway.
Oh, and just after we've received our bill, I made it a point to monitor our usage for electricity, meaning I take readings every morning and evening to see how much we use. So for the A/C, we normally use 8-10 kW per night, thats from around 8pm till 3am, If I shut it down at 5am, it goes up to 10, which is why we are now diligently using the timer to make sure it shuts down on time. The result of the cleaning has been really good, we're now down to 6 kW for the evening, that's already good considering that our daily consumption is at an average of 13.5 kW per day (24hours).  Our consumption during the day is at 4 kW. So next step is to see where we can reduce with the daytime consumption.
And as a first step, I decided to measure consumption of every electrical item we have. This is to see where we are spending so much of electricity and then reduce its usage. Starting at point 0 - meaning all sockets and appliances unplugged, I measured each and every appliance, lighting, and electronic items in the house. That way I see where the big chunk of the electricity is. And true enough, I was taken aback by the results. The appliances I wasn't expecting could contribute to a higher electricity rating were actually the simple, unexpected ones, like the oven toaster and the water dispenser (heater). Now at least we know where to adjust. And then I looked at meralco's sight for estimating the consumption) per month for electricity, and now I have some monetary value estimates for the appliances' usage. Pretty good benchmark. Now all that's left to do is to check how we do with the adjustments we made.

looking handsome

One of the things I don't find in my husband's wardrobe is a tuxedo shirt, and a coat. I would love to see him in one, unfortunately there are not much opportunities to get to wear them since he is not working for a company that requires it. And besides, working in a tuxedo and shirt in a tropical country like ours would be horrible, I can just imagine that one would be perspiring the whole day wearing that one. Might as well ask the ladies to come in fashionable trench coats. But seriously, had there been an occasion that would call for it, I would surely pursuade hubby to get one for himself, though he won't wear it often, its a good investment to keep for occasions that would require him to be majorly handsome! :-p
