The Winotech VoluMaster 9000™
Necessity is the mother of ugly, brutish invention. The volume control for an otherwise high-quality, much-liked set of computer speakers needed replacement. Radio Shack provided the innards, and Sam Ash Music provided the guitar volume knob. After some guessing about how to wire it (no thanks to the total lack of a wiring diagram), the craftsmen of Orange Wino Laboratories & Bakery got it to work.
And just to remind everyone who surfs the internets how cool I am, that's Highway to Hell that I used for test music.

So Friggin' Pleasant
Lindz and I spent Memorial Day weekend at Lake Norman. It's kind of like a Caribbean resort at her parents' condo, but no one tries to sell us weed, and the drinks are cheaper. We're always so grateful to be so near this escape. Unfortunately, our drive to the lake sometimes coincides with a NASCAR race. A race creates hateful traffic stretching into all the neighboring counties. The travel and expense that racing fans will undertake puzzles me; I can watch people drive too fast and swerve in front of each other during my commute every day. At least there's some possibility of punishment in NASCAR.
Thankfully, we missed the traffic this weekend. This is only theoretical bitching.

Kids grow up so fast
Its been almost 4 months since I actively searched for a job. I got an offer today, and looks like its going down the drain again. Its simply not for me. I know its not about being choosy. Yeah, I could grab it on the context that we need the income now, but then it won't be fair to me, and it won't be fair to the employer. Yes I'd have a job, but I won't be happy. And yes they would be happy with their choice, but I'd leave the moment something better comes along. Lose-lose for both of us. So I'm saying no. Well, tomorrow that is.
On another context, it means a few more weeks with Jessica. While she spends a lot of time with her yaya, its still going to be a huge adjustment for me when I go back to work. I might just cry everyday thinking about how much I miss her. For all the times I let her be, seeing her, her milestones, her laughter and tantrums, and seeing her only at night, spells a huge difference and a whole new adjustment period for me. I seriously think it would have been easier for me if she wasn't talking yet. Now that she's this amazing interactive character, its so easy to miss her, tantrums and all.
But well, that's something I have to get through if I will be moving on and moving up again. :-) Here's to new and more exciting challenges ahead, and SOON!

Vanity Inversion
I purchased this vanity a few weeks ago. We like the vanity. Nothing can be too easy, however. Notice how the drawers are on the left?
The inexpensive, pre-built vanity cabinets that one sees in major home improvement stores (translation: the only ones we're willing to budget for) all seem to have the drawers on the right. The pipes in our bathroom don't give a rat's ass about that. We were thus obliged to move all the hardware to make this cabinet a mirror image of its former self. We still barely had enough room:
Lindz and I also put vents in the toekick (yet another customization necessitated by the layout of this bathroom):
The grout, done by Lindz, is clearly visible.

Here come the Rainy days
Last friday brought a a lot of rains to Metro Manila. And it was scary. But looking at the glass half-full, we felt blessed in a lot of ways.
First, we were able to go home, though not to early, we were braver in going through the flooded roads inside our village since we were riding our Escape, rather than the black Sentra. Now we feel that it was indeed a good choice to get this car rather that settle for a car (it cost us much more since we had to add equity to pay for the upgraded car). But seeing that we can go through 5-6 inches of water makes if so much more worth it. For the past three years when a situation like this happens we were forced to wait it out near the village gates, where we would have to stay for 5-8 hours until the roads are passable. So for instance, if we arrived there at 6 or 7 pm and the roads aren't passable anymore, we would need to stay there for up to 2 am. Add to the anxiety that there might be some water inside the house (will get to that later) and we're not there to help.
Second, this weekend's floods were really scary, but thank God that we were spared from an Ondoy-like situation. Some water came into the house from underneath and there were flashfloods inside the village, but all in all the situation was manageable. We had to do some cleaning Friday night but only the floors, we managed to lift most of the stuff out of floor level (except of course so heavy appliances) so there's no damage to any of our stuff.
Third, our office (being 10minutes away from home) was almost flooded, but thankfully it was spared. Highest level was at 35", a few inches shy of the floor levels of the plant and the office, but it didn't get into the plant. If it did, it would mean a lot of damage and longer days and nights for everyone in the office. So yes, I am so thankful that we were spared with that.
Life really has a way of reminding us of the many blessings we have day to day. And this is one case where I am really thankful for the blessings (even if it is disguised as a typhoon.) :-)

Third Anniversary
We got a special bottle of wine for our anniversary:
Huge. Huge! Prunes, earth, olives, cherries. The finish lasts for weeks, I tell you.
I got some flowers, too.
While I was cooking, Lindz snapped some closeups of said flowers.
I was dealing with these guys:
After the meat met the heat:
I roasted some red potatoes on the Quantum Leap of Potato Technology Pan.
Medium Rare.

Rather a lot of packaging for just a desk calendar, hm?

Lindz and I didn't have any of the bathroom remodel professionally done. It was a family job. She and I lived with the project, but it would not have happened without her parents. They provided a huge amount of support (both moral and elbow-grease), and I probably wouldn't have had the courage to demolish an entire room of our house without Hub's "That's not a problem; we can fix that" mentality.

Me Brudder's Visit
(listening to Dave Brubeck, "Jazz Goes to College")
Bryan had driven thousands of miles around the country since leaving San Diego about three weeks prior. He had spent time with the rest of the family in Michigan, and then he spent some days in Washington, D.C. doing a museum tour de force. He rolled into Raleigh Friday afternoon, and we soon found ourselves sitting on my deck, listening to Django Reinhardt and drinking tasty beers. We had seen each other in August in San Diego, but I was particularly excited to have him in my home (he hadn't yet seen our house). During the weekend, we enjoyed quite a bit of good beer (most of which was sent with Bryan by our excellent, beer-wise and beer-benevolent brother-in-law Tim). We also ate quite a bit; I had a fine time cooking.
In honor of his birthday, I prepared Salmon Bryan. Here's the hollandaise:
And here's the finished product, with risotto and a glass of Rutz Cellars Pinot Noir. It turned out a bit more lemony and a bit less basily than I had hoped, but it wasn't bad:
Bryan came up with the idea for dessert. It was elegant and tasty. He had me grill some peaches (purchased at the Raleigh Farmers' Market), and we put them in a zip-lock bag with an entire bottle (minus a wee bit for us to sip) of Hogue Riesling and a bit of sugar. Hours later, I reduced the liquid in a saucepan, and he sweetened some ricotta cheese with sugar. At the time, we didn't name it, but here it is, Peaches Rock-out-with-your-Cock-out:
We did do a bit of sightseeing around Raleigh with Lindz, and we also left Lindz alone at times, so she could regain her wits (we are two fairly strange men, and our nonsense increases exponentially when we're together). On Sunday, Bryan and I drove to Wilmington. We toured the U.S.S. North Carolina:
And we fulfilled Bryan's wish to reach the other edge of the continent (note the fact that the ocean is on the right, as opposed to the left, where the Pacific is):
Yes, it was a fine weekend that was all too fleeting. I found myself more than a little envious of my brother; I want to be driving around the country. When roaming at will, the heart is not heavy. Monday morning, he backed out of my driveway, and I went to work.
