Pimp Your Screen arrives on Android to pretty up your phone

Those with an iOS device are probably familiar with Pimp Your Screen, an app that brings hundreds of high resolution background images to iDevices. The app has finally migrated over to Android, and it has some new features to go with Android's higher level of customization.

The app on iOS was mainly a way to get images that were well suited to the layout of icons on the home screen. The Android version of Pimp Your Screen is a package of high-resolution wallpapers along with various widgets. The wallpapers are accessed in the app itself, but the widgets go in the system widget drawer with all the others.

The wallpapers can be sorted through by category, or by what's new and popular. The categories include sci-fi, nature, sports, abstract, and more. You can scroll through the gallery and save the ones you like for later (this is actually a bit slow—it could use some tweaking). When applying the image, the app allows you to select the width, and thus the scrolling effect. Not all Android devices do this, but it's nice to have the option. There is also a function which automatically rotates your wallpaper as new images are added.

Widgets come in several different types. There are clocks, weather trackers, and settings toggles. None of these are new to Android, but this is a solid package of them all grouped together. The clocks are mostly on the funky side, with neon lights, big text, retro LCDs, or abstract designs. The popular Android weather flip-clock trope is also included here. The weather icon are more understated, as are the settings controls.

Most of the widgets are good in Pimp Your Screen, but there are some packages that do a better job, like Beautiful Widgets. The draw with this new app is that it also has the database of high-resolution wallpapers built in, and it's only $0.99. That's a bit cheaper than the competition, and there is a lot more content here than in the iOS version for the same price.
