BlackBerry A10 to be game-focused and shaped like a Samsung Galaxy S4

Fresh reports are claiming that the forthcoming BlackBerry A10 will come with an unexpected focus on gaming, and that it'll resemble a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Echoing what an industry insider informed us last month, multiple trusted sources of BGR's have claimed that the forthcoming BlackBerry A10 smartphone is going to be the most capable, powerful BlackBerry yet with a media-friendly 5-inch Super AMOLED display.

More interestingly, the BlackBerry A10 will come with "a huge focus on gaming."

Despite being geared towards "power and gaming," the A10 will only come with a dual-core processor. Apparently, BlackBerry has been unable to make the jump to a quad-core architecture - either due to concerns over battery life or because of difficulties optimising BlackBerry 10 for a quad-core setup.

Still, this dual-core CPU will reportedly be backed by a healthy 2GB of RAM, and the BlackBerry A10 will apparently adopt the same silicon as the iPhone, with separate CPU and GPU processors. In the iPhone's case, this has certainly resulted in a string of highly capable gaming smartphones.

The report also has something to say about the BlackBerry A10's design. It'll apparently closely resemble the Samsung Galaxy S4, though if anything it'll be larger. It's also described as being "more rounded and less aggressive-looking" than the BlackBerry Z10.

It's claimed that we can expect to see the BlackBerry A10 launching some time this autumn.

The app allows snippets, allows users to respond to emails with common responses, and even customize settings based on the account being used. There is great integration with other third-party apps 1Password, Due, Omifocus, Evernote, and more. For now, the app doesn’t feature push notifications or a unified inbox, which may be a dealbreaker for some.

You can purchase Dispatch from the App Store here.

Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A is now available in two new hues

Samsung launched its Galaxy S4 LTE-A smartphone in Arctic Blue and Aurora Red color options and now, the device is getting two new shades - Black Mist and White Frost.

Samsung has already shipped 150k Galaxy S4 LTE-A units in its homeland in just 14 days after its launch and its hoping to continue the trend. The addition of new hues is expected to help the powerful smartphone maintain the good performance.

To recap the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A, it comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor rather than the Snapdragon 600 on the international version. However, the rest of the hardware remains identical to its sibling.

LG Optimus G2 strongly rumoured for August 7 launch

LG has released an invitation and teaser video for its upcoming August 7 event, strongly tipping the LG Optimus G2 for a summer arrival.

The long-confirmed LG Optimus G2 could launch at the international media event LG is holding on August 7 in New York.

The South Korean electronics manufacturer has released formal invitations and a teaser video for the New York-based event with the tagline “Great 2 Have You”, likely to be a strong reference to the upcoming Optimus G2 flagship.

With the August 7 event confirmed just days after LG confirmed that the LG Optimus G2 will run on a Snapdragon 800 CPU, it was already very likely that the next LG flagship would make an appearance at the New York event.

LG had already confirmed to TrustedReviews that the LG Optimus G2 would definitely launch in Q3, so this August event fits perfectly with this release schedule.

LG Optimus G2 Features

Already confirmed to be a super slim smartphone that reportedly may even be too thin for traditional buttons for volume controls or a power button, the LG Optimus G2 will run on Qualcomm’s cutting-edge Snapdragon 800 CPU.

This CPU would mean the LG Optimus G2 would be 75 per cent better than its LG Optimus G predecessor in terms of performance, not to mention the LG manufactured Google Nexus 4 or rival Sony Xperia Z.

Due to its thin body, the flagship should feature an unusual button array. In fact, the latest leaked image showed the LG Optimus G2 pictured with rear volume buttons situated just below the camera.

The latest rumours suggest the Optimus G2 will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p LCD IPS screen surrounding by an ultra-thin bezel to keep the phone’s body slimline.

Potentially also packing a 13-megapizel rear camera with shot enhancing optical image stabilisation, the LG Optimus G2 could rival the HTC One or Nokia Lumia 925 in terms of camera functionality.

Droid Ultra allegedly breaks cover ahead of Moto X reveal

The forthcoming Moto X phone may kickstart the new Google-owned era for the company, but Motorola is still planning to keep its existing brands alive, judging by leaks this weekend.

Just yesterday we published a purported leaked press image of the Motorola Droid Maxx, scheduled to arrive later this year.

On Sunday, a photo of a second device emerged, courtesy of the XDA Developers' forum, which may showcase the Motorola Droid Ultra.

The white-hued handset, which features capacitive hardware buttons within the bezel rather than on the screen, is thought to be coming to the Verizon network in the US before the year is out

Little else to go on...

Beyond the snap, there's no further information on specs or size. All that we can tell is that the bezel is quite thin and the volume rocker and power button sits on the size of the handset.

Last week, the company sort-of announced the Droid Ultra on its website, advising interested parties to 'think thin' but didn't reveal anything else in the process.

Of course, the device could just be a leaked prototype and nothing like the real thing, but we'll keep our noses to the ground on this one?

Nokia boss teases 'major launch' in 2013, following Lumia 1020 reveal

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop followed up the launch of the 41-megapixel Nokia Lumia 1020 handset by promising another big release before the year is out.

The under-fire bossman said the next "major launch" is coming "later this year" during a Q&A session at the New York event on Thursday afternoon.

Elop's comments are sure to spark more speculation that the oft-anticipated Nokia Lumia tablet running Windows 8 or Windows RT might be on the way before we draw a line under 2013.

Earlier this year, Nokia was granted a patent with the US Patent & Trademark Office for a tablet device that looked very similar to the Microsoft surface.

The proposed device had a keyboard cover, just like the Surface devices, that could be used as a kickstand. However the patent was filed back in October 2011, so plans may have moved on since then.

Back in February, we got a brief glimpse of what looked like a Nokia Lumia tablet when it appeared on a screen at a Lumia 620 launch event in Pakistan, of all places.

If Elop wasn't referring to a tablet, it's difficult to know what Nokia could have on the agenda.

The company has launched three flagship handsets in very quick succession with the Lumia 925, Lumia 928 and today's Lumia 1020 setting Nokia up very well for the year.

We'll keep our nose to the ground for more leaks. If the recent past is anything to go by, whatever Nokia has up its sleeve shouldn't be too elusive.

iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 release dates delayed according to reports

Those holding out for the iPad 5 or iPad mini 2 release date could be in for a bit of a wait, with latest reports suggesting Apple’s eagerly awaited tablets are facing delays.

With Apple’s longtime manufacturing partner Foxconn suggesting it is no longer working with the Cupertino based company to produce its tablet lines, rumours have started to emerge suggesting both the 9.7-inch iPad 5 and 7.9-inch iPad mini 2 could be hit by delays.

While Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the impending arrival of either the iPad 5 or iPad mini 2, it has been widely suggested the next-generation tablets will hit retailers in September alongside the WWDC 2013 unveiled iOS 7 operating system update.

Due to the lack of formality surrounding the mooted tablets’ arrivals, we would suggest that the latest claims of potential delays are taken with a considerable pinch of salt.

The latest reports have suggested that Apple has ceased its partnership with Foxconn due to a lack of reliability on the manufacturing partner’s front. It has been claimed issues with the production of the iPhone 5 has forced Apple’s hand to act, resulting in potential delays to upcoming products.

iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 Rumours

With both the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 expected to launch later this year, it is believed the tablets, alongside the iPhone 5S, will be the first devices to come pre-installed with iOS 7.

While the iPad 5 is expected to a new, slimmer form factor similar to that of its 7-inch sibling, the iPad mini 2’s main improvement has been tipped to be the arrival of a new Retina display.

Further iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 rumours have suggested that the usual array of improved camera optics, fast processors and the potential of larger storage options could be set to make an appearance.

BlackBerry A10 image leaked

Following recent rumours of the BlackBerry A10's power and size, the first image of the device has leaked onto the internet.

The picture revealed by BGR shows the BlackBerry A10, also known as the Aristo, in all it's large-screen glory.

It'll be a touch-only device (no trademark BlackBerry keyboard) with a large 5-inch Super AMOLED display - the largest BlackBerry smartphone yet.

It's claimed that this screen won't be particularly sharp with a resolution of 1280 x 720. That's just 720p, when most new 5-inch Android devices are 1080p.

The BlackBerry A10 will apparently feature a dual-core CPU backed by 2GB of RAM, as well as a separate GPU. Previous reports claim that BlackBerry will leverage this setup to make the A10 a gaming powerhouse.

The rounded edges and touches of white revealed in this picture appear to partially confirm previous suggestions that the BlackBerry A10 would resemble the Samsung Galaxy S4 more than any previous BlackBerry. Having said that, we can definitely see plenty of the BlackBerry Z10's design language in there.

Apparently the BlackBerry A10's rear will "feature something similar to the BlackBerry Q10," though we're not quite sure what that's supposed to mean at this point.

The report maintains that we'll be seeing the BlackBerry A10 hit the market some time this autumn.

Unlocked Nokia Lumia 1020 goes on pre-order in the USA for $735

Nokia Lumia 1020 was officially unveiled just last week and understandably caused quite a lot of excitement. It's the long awaited 41MP PureView Windows Phone-powered smartphone that had been in the rumorlands since Nokia 808 PureView came around.

Nokia Lumia 1020 will hit the USA on July 26 exclusively via AT&T. It will cost $300 with a two-year contract and the carrier's pre-order campaign is going live tomorrow. Lumia 1020 will hit the shelves worldwide before the end of September.

Meanwhile, the retailer Negri Electronics is taking pre-orders for the unlocked version of the cameraphone. You can book your unit for $735.50, but there is no specific shipping date. We guess you'll receive it shortly after the official premiere on AT&T.

Yesterday, we also saw the Lumia 1020 go on pre-orders in Germany, but users there will have to wait longer to get their units. The European version of the device that is supposed to launch by the end of Q3.

Europeans will also need to pay quite a lot more to own the Lumia 1020, with pre-orders going for the hefty €800 (we suspect final price will be a bit lower, though).

Nokia Lumia 925 tips and tricks

The Nokia Lumia 925 is the slimmer, prettier version of the Lumia 920. It has a great camera, Windows Phone 8 and is dead easy to use. There are some tweaks needed to get the best out of it, though. Here are our top Nokia Lumia 925 tips and tricks.

Hardware

What are the three pips for?

On the back of the Lumia 925 are three mysterious little metal circles, like a little crop circle incident just above the speaker grille. These are the contacts that make wireless charging possible.

Nokia removed integrated wireless charging from the phone to make it slimmer and lighter, so now you have to buy a separate £25 case to get it working. These cases interface with these little metal dots in order to charge the battery.

How to get wireless charging

As well as one of the wireless charging cases, to get the phone’s battery charging wires-free you need to buy a Qi charging plate. You don’t need an official Nokia charging pad, just one that uses the Qi standard. Search hard enough online and you’ll find Qi charging plates for £20-30.

Screen

Touchscreen sensitivity

One of the great features across a number of Lumia handsets, including the 925, is there enhanced touchscreen sensitivity. From within the Display+Touch section of the Settings menu you can choose to toggle the screen between normal and high sensitivity modes; the key difference being that setting the 925 into high sensitivity allows you the ability to operate the touchscreen through gloves.

What’s more, there’s the option to double tap the screen to wake, which is a nice alternative tapping the power/lock key.

How to change colour saturation and temperature

The Nokia Lumia 925 uses a PenTile AMOLED screen. This uses a large red sub-pixel, which tends to give images a slightly warm hue. AMOLEDs also tend to oversaturate colours.

Both of these effects are visible in the Lumia 925, but you can fix them. Go to Settings>Display-plus-touch and tap the adjust button down at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to a menu that lets you fiddle with the colour saturation and colour temperature of the screen.

Software

Accessing the Siri-like voice assistant

Windows Phone 8 has a voice assistant, much like the Siri feature of iOS. To access it, just hold a finger down on the Windows soft key (the one in the middle). The voice command menu should pop up, and the phone will start listening out for commands automatically.

Identifying tunes without an app

Windows Phone 8 also has a built-in Shazam-like feature, which identifies tunes simply by listening to them. To access this, hold a finger down on the Search soft key (that’s the right one) until the Bing search bar pops up. Then tap the quaver button at the bottom of the screen.

The Lumia 925 will immediately start listening for music. However, music identification will only work if you have an internet connection – it needs to send the snippet to a server for identification.

Scanning barcodes and QR codes, OCR

Right next to the quaver icon of the Lumia 925’s music identification feature is one of Windows Phone 8’s coolest little extras, accessed by pressing the ‘eye’ icon in the Bing search bar menu.

It’s a camera-based feature that reads barcodes, scans QR codes and identifies text using OCR – optical character recognition. Most usefully it’ll event translate identified words between languages.

Data Sense

Since the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich, Android users have been able to keep tabs of their mobile data usage and even had the option to limit mobile data to prevent accidental costly downloads. Now, thanks to Nokia and the 925’s new Data Sense app, Windows Phone users have that same level of control.

Out-the-box Data Sense offers you a graph view of data usage over both mobile and WiFi networks independently. You can swipe to the side to see a breakdown of apps and services using data in a more detail capacity and if you want you can even set a data limit.

The ‘Set Data Limit’ menu lets you choose from different plan structures like pre-paid or pay monthly and from there define when your limit resets and how much your data limit is. From here you can choose to simply receive a warning, or have your 925 limit data use when it’s approaching the limit.

How to turn off Glance

Glance mode is a new Nokia feature that displays a clock on the screen when the Lumia 925 is put into standby – rather than showing nothing at all. It uses a little bit of battery life, though, and some of you simply won’t like it.

You can turn Glance off by heading to Settings, scrolling down to and selecting Display Touch, then flicking right-to-left until you get to the Glance menu. The top option here lets you either turn it off, keep it on permanently, or have it switch off after 15 minutes. There’s also a night mode that makes the clock red instead of white, which isn't so bright and so is less distracting at night.

How to download maps in HERE Maps

One of the best software features of the Lumia 925 is HERE Maps. This is the phone’s equivalent to Google Maps.

And it’s arguably even better because you can download maps of entire countries for use when offline – all for free. Tap the menu button within HERE Maps (it’s the three-pip icon at the bottom-right of the screen) and tap ‘download maps’. Follow the instructions and you’ll be able to download areas and countries across the globe.

How to change the colour of Live Tiles

As it uses a colour-rich AMOLED screen, it’s a good idea to be careful about which colour of Live Tile you use for the phone’s home screen. To pick your shade, go to Settings and tap the ‘theme’ entry near the top.

Windows Phone 8 offers 20 different shades. We find that the more muted shades of the bottom two rows of colours work best with the Lumia 925.

How to increase battery life

There are a few simple ways to get better battery life out of the Lumia 925. The simplest is to use a black background rather than a white one for the phone’s home screen. You’ll find this option in Settings > Theme. Super AMOLED screens use less battery when much of the screen is dark/black.

Next comes Battery Saver. This mode is found in the Settings menu. It stops apps from having access to mobile internet, and stops them from running in the background – dramatically reducing how much 3G drains the phone’s battery. In the Advanced menu at the bottom of the Battery Saver menu, you can choose whether it’s on all the time or just when the battery level is low.

Photo tips

For the best photos, don’t use Nokia Smart Cam

Software-wise, the big whoop about the Lumia 925’s camera is Nokia Smart Cam. This is a Windows Phone 8 Lens that adds a bunch of semi-advanced features to the camera roster. However, in pure quality terms its shots are worse than the standard camera app's photos.

Nokia Smart Cam shoots a bunch of shots in rapid succession over a couple of seconds. This stops the phone from using the longer exposure times that are a big part of the PureView plan in the Lumia 925, and it also captures photos in less-than-max resolution. The Lumia 925 has an 8.7-megapixel camera, but Nokia Smart Cam’s snaps are only five megapixels a piece.

Do not use the flash

One of the best things about the Lumia 925’s PureView camera is that it stops you from having to use the flash much. We recommend not using the flash in conditions with anything but very poor lighting. LED flashes like the Lumia 925’s unbalance photos, and don’t offer particularly even coverage. The flash control button is the little lightning symbol in the camera app.

Using Nokia Smart Cam

Nokia Smart Cam can be a little confusing at first. It’s a burst shot mode that lets you apply smart effects to your photos – you can create a multi-exposure action shot, remote moving objects from a scene or use multi-exposure to get the best expressions of people from all the shots on offer.

To access these modes, you need to go to the Photos app, then tap the ‘Nokia Smart Cam’ link that’ll pop up with any shots taken using the app. The modes aren't actually accessed from within the camera app itself.

PhotoBeamer

PhotoBeamer is a new app that comes preinstalled on the phone that lets you share photos with any phone irrespective of OS.

On opening the app you need to choose a photo you want to share and once you’ve chosen said photo the app will then launch the camera. From the receipt’s phone, heading to photobeamer.com will bring up a QR-code on-screen.

Scanning the QR-code from the 925 will then cause the chosen image to appear on both devices and you’ll even be able to resize the image in real-time, from one device to the other.

Apple iPhone 5S to boast slow motion video capture?

The next generation iPhone 5S handset could arrive packing a new-and-improved slow motion video camera, according to reports on Tuesday evening.

The company is working on a new killed video capture feature that'll debut on the new handset, facilitated by the final version of iOS 7, according to one developer who studied the operating system's beta code and passed on his findings to the 9to5Mac blog.

The new feature is called 'Mogul', according to Hazma Sood, and would allow video to be captured at an impressive 120-frames-per-second. This could crisp and clear slow-motion video mode being added to the device's camera functionality.

Here's what 9to5Mac had to say: "According to our analysis and testing of the code, “Mogul” is a feature in development that allows the iPhone to capture video at an exceptionally fast and precise rate. Specifically, our testing indicates that the feature can allow the iPhone to record video at a rate of 120 frames-per-second (FPS). The resolution at which this 120FPS video could be recorded at, however, is currently unclear."

Of course, Apple wouldn't be first smartphone manufacturer to bring this feature to market. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 also offers 120fps, slow motion video.

The iPhone 5S is rumoured to be Apple's bi-annual soft update and is expected to retain the iPhone 5's form factor.

It is expected to debut a new, faster and more powerful processor and perhaps a 13-megapixel camera too. Other rumours have suggested a fingerprint sensor could be introduced for the first time, although that's probably an outside bet at this stage.

Could a high-resolution, high-speed video feature be the killer feature to half Samsung's rise when the iPhone 5S arrives this autumn?

LG Windows Phone 8 mobile in the works

LG is working on a phone that runs the Windows Phone 8 operating system, with the handset currently at R&D phase.

According to Indian website Lightreading.in, LG is in the process of making its first Windows Phone 8 mobile.

LG India MD Soon H Kwon says that “we are actually working on our Windows Phone 8 OS powered smartphone,” although had no specific release plans to share about the device.

Although LG produced one of the first Windows Phone 7 mobiles, in the shape of the LG Optimus 7, this phone – if released – will be the first Windows Phone 8 handset to come from the company.

Kwon explained the company’s renewed interest in the Microsoft platform, saying “we believe that Windows will pick up going ahead, as Microsoft is pumping efforts into it.”

The future of Windows Phone 8

Reports on the future of Windows Phone vary wildly depending on where you look, though.

A Canalys report released in June 2013 suggests that Windows Phone will have a fairly healthy 12.7 per cent share of the mobile market by 2017. However, the latest figures show Windows Phone’s share shrinking.

Recent comScore stats analysing US mobile market share drop from 3.2 per cent to just 3 per cent between Q1 2013 and Q2 2013 – from bad to (slightly) worse.

To date, the highest-profile Windows Phone devices have come from Nokia. Its Lumia-series mobiles such as the Lumia 925 and Lumia 800 have been given far greater marketing support than any other Windows Phone handsets.

LG Phones

Although LG is considered a diminishing star in the mobile firmament by some, its production of the Google Nexus 4 has actually seen its market share rise in the last year.

It mobile market share in Q1 2013 was 4.9 per cent, up from 3.2 per cent in Q1 2012. However, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says LG’s increase in share is “almost solely driven” by the Nexus 4.

The most obvious issue – the Google Nexus 4 is not universally recognised as an ‘LG’ phone.

Google’s next phone was initially expected to be made by Motorola, the mobile arm of which was bought by Google in 2012.

However, reports surfacing as recently as a month ago suggest LG will be behind the Google Nexus 5. Perhaps LG’s mobile fortunes are set to continue.

Android 4.3 HTC One gets Bluetooth certification

A HTC One running Android 4.3 has just been spotted getting certified at the Bluetooth SIG, despite Google yet to make the OS update official.

The vanilla Android version of the successful HTC One smartphone has just received Bluetooth certification running the as yet unconfirmed Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS.

The device has the model number PN071 reflecting its Google Edition status, and will be available in the future from the Google Play store, like Google’s own range of Nexus devices.

It seems strange that the HTC One is going through Bluetooth certification again, but it could be going through the motions again because Android 4.3 is tipped to bring Bluetooth 4.0 LE support with it.

The HTC One Google Edition could be one of the first devices to run the Android 4.3 update, along with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition and the possible Nexus 7 Mark 2 or highly rumoured Nexus 5.

Designed to offer all the HTC One features and specs without the HTC Sense UX interface, the stock Android HTC One was officially confirmed by the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer post Google I/O.

Android 4.3 won’t be the complete overhaul many had expected for Google’s next OS. The Jelly Bean update will bring some new features, but the strongly rumoured Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie should be the all new OS expected later this year.

HTC One Features

The HTC One Google Edition will retain the same specs as the original HTC One, which means consumers will have the benefit of the 4.7-inch screen with a 1080 x 1920p resolution and 469ppi image density.

Powered by a 2300mAh Lithium-Polymer battery, the HTC One has a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM.

The flagship smartphone currently runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Bluetooth, NFC and IR LED connectivity.

Pirate Bay co-founder to release surveillance-proof messaging app

Hemlis app for iOS and Android is an encrypted messaging service that will keep your conversations private.

Peter Sunde, co-founder of Pirate Bay is trying to raise funds for a messaging app that encrypts both ends of the conversation.

Hemlis, which is Swedish for secret, will prevent ISPs and the government from accessing the information. It also aims to keep your conversations so private that even the creators of the app will not be able to see what you are talking about.

The app will be free to download and will also have in-app purchases to unlock new features like the ability to send images. The creators also claim it has no plans to use advertising in the Hemlis app or sell user data to raise funds for the project.

Instead Sunde and his team are taking the crowdfunding route through PayPal, Bitcoin and the Heml.is website. Depending on how much you donate, you will be able to access unlock codes or pre-register user names.

The app appears to be a clear response to the recent Prism scandal. The Heml.is website makes reference to the surveillance program operated by the NSA (National Security Agency) that is alleged to have collected data from users of Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo and Google amongst others popular web services.

On the website it states, "Companies like Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google have been forced to open up their systems and hand out information about their users. At the same time they have been forbidden to tell anyone about it!

"We're building a message app where no one can listen in, not even us. We would rather close down the service before letting anyone in."

You can watch a video of Peter Sunde talking about the Hemlis app below.

Sky Sports iPad app gets Ashes cricket makeover adding Hawk-Eye camera access

New Sky Sports Ashes Event Centre lets you analyse decisions and rewind the action so you don't miss a single delivery.

Cricket-lovers planning to tune into the Ashes on Sky Go via an iPad will be able to access the new Ashes Event Centre to play with new features while you watch the action unfold live.

In what Sky Sports is calling a ‘second-screen cricket experience’, the Ashes Event Centre will let users view the same statistics that the Sky Sports commentary team will have access to during the five test series.

You’ll also be able to use the Hawk-Eye review system to do your own analysis on the game-changing decisions made by the third umpire.

If you happen to miss a wicket or a face-off between Joe Root and David Warner, the new timeline feature will let you re-watch the action simply by stepping back in time.

Forming part of Sky Sports’ comprehensive coverage of the Investec Ashes Series 2013 this summer, the Ashes Event Centre can be found inside the current Sky Sports app and will be free to download for Sky Sports subscribers.

If you don’t have Sky, but do own an iPad, you’ll need to pay £4.99 to unlock the Ashes content from the in-app purchases section. If you don’t own an iPad but do subscribe to Sky Sports, you can get check out the new features via the Sky website.

The Ashes iPad app follows in the footsteps of similar offerings introduced by Sky Sports to accompany its coverage of Formula 1 and Premier League football giving users access to the same stats and tools used by Sky Sports presenters and pundits.

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 launches with interactive toys, coming September 19

Rovio has officially announced the next instalment in its bird flinging game series, Angry Birds Star Wars 2, complete with an interactive toy lineup from Hasbro.

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 will be available across various app stores on September 19, complete with a full range of Star Wars Angry Birds toys that will work in a similar fashion to Skylanders.

“Today we’re extremely excited to announce the arrival of Angry Birds Star Wars 2, launching on September 19 across app stores worldwide”, said Rovio. “The new game will tackle the preview, introducing a wide roster of never-before-seen Angry Birds Star Wars characters. The best part? You’ll get to play with over 30 of them!”

As expected by the Angry Birds Star Wars teaser released at the end of last week, Rovio’s next game will focus on the Star Wars prequel movies including lots of new characters and elements from the films.

We expect that Anakin Skywalker, General Grevious, Darth Maul and Padme Amidala will all get an Angry Birds make-over, but interesting Rovio are declining to comment on whether Jar Jar Binks will be making an appearance.

“At this point we will not comment on rumours or speculation that Jar Jar Binks will be in the game.”

Hasbro will also be launching a range of 30 Angry Birds Star Wars figures that can be scanned into the game, similar to the functionality of Skylanders: Spryo’s Adventure.

Known as Telepods, the toys are around an inch high and are placed onto a plinth which can scan them into the game via the front-facing camera on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 8 devices.

“To compliment this wide lineup of characters, there will also be a line of over 30 collectable Telepods figures from Hasbro. Placing these figures onto your phone or tablet camera will scan your character of choice directly into the game, allowing you to select new characters on the fly.”

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 will also introduce the new “Pork Side” mode that allows players to toss Empire Pigs instead of the birds.

“Stay tuned for more news on Angry Birds Star Wars 2 over the coming weeks; we have some really cool reveals planned! Also, look out for Return of the Jedi in the original Angry Birds Star Wars!”

Instagram goes web-wide with new photo and video embed feature

Instagram has added a new share option to its desktop website, allowing users to embed photos and videos around the web for the first time.

The company announced the update on Wednesday afternoon, and in doing so hopes to make content more visible beyond the standalone mobile app, Instagram.com website and Facebook and Tumblr where photos can already be shared easily.

The new Share button, which appears to the right of single photo pages (not within the timeline), beneath the like and comment buttons. Clicking it serves up an embed code which can be posted to blogs like Tumblr (beyond direct uploads) and on websites with content publishing software that allow media embedding.

Users aren't limited to sharing their own photos, they can also publish those belonging to other users of the service.

In a blog post, Instagram says privacy settings still apply so if your photos are private then no-one will be able to post them around the web. However, if you're happy for your photos to be viewed within the app and not happy for them to potentially be plastered all over the web, you may want to think about setting that profile to private.

Unfortunately there's no middle ground. Your posts are either completely private and viewable onto to those you wish to see them, or they're totally open to all and sundry.

The company wrote: "As always, you own your photos and videos, and we want to make sure that’s understood no matter where your content appears. Whether you want to embed your video on your blog or a friend wants to feature your photo on a website, everyone will clearly see that your content belongs to you. Your embedded photo or video appears with your Instagram username, and clicking on the Instagram logo will take people to your page on Instagram.com where they can discover more of your photos and videos."

The embed option has been present within Twitter and the newer Vine video app for some time, allowing content curators to showcase interesting items to their audience in a native form.

It seems the Facebook-owned Instagram is determined that there are no features offered by Vine that it cannot.

Moto X phone customisation options and images leaked

Specific details of Motorola's forthcoming Moto X Android smartphone have emerged concerning its unique customisation options.

Motorola yesterday placed Moto X ads in all of the major US newspapers promising "the first smartphone that you can design yourself," but it remained a mystery exactly which elements you could personalise.

Now ABC News believes it has the answer. According to its sources, Moto X customers will be able to specify the colour of their device as well as adding an engraving to the back cover.

This will work through an online system, which will enable you to choose from a palette of different colours. Customers can specify which to use for the back case, and another for the phone's trim.

In a separate report, images of the Moto X's interchangeable back covers have leaked online through French website Nowhere Else.

Besides being able to have a name or message engraved onto the back cover, you'll also be able to send in a personal picture and have it added as your default wallpaper out of the box.

The report confirmed that users won't be able to customise the internals of the phone (which was always a fanciful idea), and confirmed that it would be a "mid-range" phone.

This would appear to support the Moto X specs that were leaked last month. Apparently the phone will feature such mid-range components as a 720p display, a 1.7GHz dual-core CPU and a 10-megapixel camera.

Instead, the biggest hardware advances will come in the shape of the Moto X's advanced sensor usage. It's suggested that users will be able to flick the phone to launch the camera app, and that the phone will be intelligent enough to know when you're driving, and will kick in the speakerphone function accordingly.

Google's recent work in voice recognition is also set to manifest itself in the Moto X.

HTC One Mini release date, news and rumours

The HTC One Mini is looking more and more likely as the rumours surrounding the handset continue to flow thick and fast.

With the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini last year, followed by the Galaxy S4 Mini this year, there's a clear market for cut price flagship smartphones.

The general rule, it seems, with these "mini" versions is they look almost identical to their big brothers but specs are slashed - quad-core becomes dual-core, full HD becomes 720p at best and cameras also take a bit of a beating.

While they may be "mini" in name, they aren't exactly mini in nature with an average screen size of 4.3-inches making these handsets bigger than the iPhone 5 - so you'll probably still need a decent sized pocket for the HTC One Mini.

Rumours of a One Mini handset first arose in April 2013, with early reports name checking the device as the HTC M4.

To help you get an idea of what you might be able to expect from the HTC One Mini we've rounded up all those unruly rumours into our smartphone pen for your perusal.

HTC One Mini release date and price

The trail is pretty cold when it comes to the HTC One Mini release date with no upcoming HTC event to speak of. Early reports suggesting it'll arrive around the same time as the S4 mini have clearly been proven incorrect.

Bloomberg has tentatively suggested that the HTC One Mini release date may be in August, but as of yet we haven't heard anything from the Taiwanese firm about a possibe event.

What we do have in the calendar however is IFA 2013 in Berlin, which could be the perfect platform for the HTC to launch its next smartphone - it might even show up alongside the HTC One Max.

If Samsung's pricing regime for its mini handsets is anything to go by then you can expect the HTC One Mini to sport a mid to high-end price tag which will see it go head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, Sony Xperia SP, BlackBerry Q5 and Nokia Lumia 820.

HTC One Mini screen

A consistency noticeable through all the various leaks we've seen so far on the HTC One Mini is the screen size.

Back in May notable phone leaker @evleaks mentioned the One Mini would sport a 4.3-inch affair with a 720p resolution, and that news seems to have held true over the past couple of months.

While the 720p display may not sound as fancy as the full HD offering on the HTC One, at the smaller size you'll still be getting a decent picture - just take a look at the Galaxy S4 Mini.

HTC One Mini processor

When it comes to power the HTC One Mini looks pretty unlikely to sport the quad-core processor of the One, instead having to settle for a dual-core chip instead.

Later rumours pegged the One Mini as having a Qualcomm-made 1.4GHz dual-core processor, which would put it slightly below the 1.7GHz chip in the Galaxy S4 Mini.

In terms of RAM it seems the One Mini is less likely to miss out, with 2GB quoted by several different sources.

HTC One Mini operating system

Most reports seem to point towards Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice for the HTC One Mini.

Another report went one further and "confirmed" the HTC One Mini would be running Android 4.2.2, with the firm's Sense overlay obviously in play too.

It's probably unlikely that we'll see a Google-Edition of the HTC One Mini which runs the stock version of Android, as we reckon that makeover will be reserved for flagships only.

HTC One Mini camera

HTC made a big song and dance about the Ultrapixel camera on the One and its low-light performance, but even the rumour mill has been pretty quiet on the snappers that may adorn the One Mini.

It's not clear whether we'll see the Ultrapixel shenanigans again, or if the Taiwanese firm decides to return to the more conventional megapixel setup - but apparently the One Mini will be able to record full HD video and capture Zoes with its rear camera.

You can probably expect to see a front-facing camera on the One Mini too, as this option is becoming an almost default feature nowadays - even on cheaper handsets.

HTC One Mini more specs

The design of the HTC One Mini is expected to mirror that of the HTC One and, with that in mind, rumours that suggest it'll sport the same dual front-facing speakers are likely to be accurate.

HTC may even stuff in its Boomsound technology into the One Mini alongside the Beats Audio tech which adorns all its smartphones.

It's thought that the One Mini will also carry 16GB of internal storage, but if it sports the same metallic chassis as its older brother the chance of a microSD slot being available is pretty unlikely.

That body may prove a barrier for hardcore battery fans, as the rumoured 1700mAh power pack is likely to be sealed inside the One Mini, never to see the light of day.

HTC One Mini design

The trump card the HTC One Mini may hold over its Samsung rival is its premium body, with multiple reports suggesting the cut-down smartphone will inherit the metallic chassis from its big brother.

That certainly seemed to the case in an early render of the One Mini posted online by @evleaks, which showed the handset with just a few minor differences - such as the position of the flash.

A pretty blurry image then cropped up apparently showing the One Mini sitting next to the HTC One, although the quality of the snap doesn't exactly lend itself to being trustworthy.

The design was then mooted for a third time in a couple of snaps claiming to show the HTC One Mini in black, with the layout matching that of the early render.

Sony launches My Xperia phone tracking service

Sony has initiated its own smartphone tracking service called My Xperia, enabling you to monitor the whereabouts of you handset when it's lost or stolen.

The service was launched in beta earlier in the year, but only for Nordic countries. Now Sony has announced on its official blog that My Xperia is rolling out worldwide over the next few weeks.

My Xperia is described as a "remote security app" that can protect your personal data as well as tracking your phone.

Users of Sony Xperia devices from 2012 or 2013 can access the service by signing into myxperia.sonymobile.com with your Google ID.

From the central interface that you encounter here, you can do a number of things. For one, you can remotely sound an alert on your phone, ignoring silent mode and waking the screen from sleep.

You can also locate your phone on a map, lock it to keep your personal data safe an ping the phone a message with contact details, should it simply be lost.

The most drastic thing you can do with this new My Xperia tool, though, is to remotely wipe  the data stored on your phone and SD card.

My Xperia is essentially a belated answer to Apple's own Find My iPhone service, which launched three years ago.

Google has yet to provide its own equivalent service for the Android platform, though there are a number of third party apps on the Google Play Store that do the same thing, such as Lookout Security & Antivirus and Avast's similar Mobile Security & Antivirus.

iPhone 5 more popular than Samsung Galaxy S4 says report

Apple’s iPhone 5 is more popular than the Samsung Galaxy S4, latest figures based on UK sales figures of the two smartphones have suggested.

According to the monthly uSwitch Mobile Tracker which monitors smartphone sales, pre-orders and live searches, the iPhone 5 has retained the crown as the UK’s most popular smartphone for a fourth consecutive month while the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 could only achieve third. Bookended by the two high-end handsets is the aging iPhone 4S.

“Samsung really caught lightning in a bottle with the Galaxy S3, delivering an affordable and appealing iPhone alternative at the perfect moment,” Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert with uSwitch stated. “The Galaxy S4 has so far failed to grab the attention of smartphone fans in quite the same way.”

He added: “The fact the S4 is tracking below analysts’ expectations could explain why the South Korean giant has brought the launches of its Galaxy S4 Zoom, S4 Active and S4 Mini to the fore - a trio of smartphones targeting specific sectors of the market with a laser-like focus.

“Its strategy has always been to dominate the market with multiple devices, rather than focusing on a single effort and, thus far, it has proven a very successful approach.”

Earlier this week it was claimed that Samsung has shipped 20 million Samsung Galaxy S4 handsets to date, although global sales of the Android 4.2.2 device have been considerably lower than early analyst expectations. Concerns have remained around Samsung Galaxy S4 sales despite the Korean manufacturer recording record quarterly profits.

With Samsung and Apple dominating the UK’s top ten most popular smartphones, the 8GB iPhone 4 is reportedly the nation’s fourth most popular phone for June 2013, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 in fifth. With a further three Samsung handsets lining up in the top ten, the Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini sit in spots eight through ten respectively.

“The iPhone’s assured position of three spots in the top ten speaks volumes of the longevity and enduring appeal of Apple handsets,” Doku stated. “Three years is a lifetime in smartphone terms, and few devices can hold their own in terms of features today. However, the iPhone 4 – released back in June 2010 – is now available from as little as £15 per month, making it not only a fantastic device, but also incredible value for money.”

Completing the month’s top ten, the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z sit in positions six and seven respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to feature 5.7-inch display and September launch

Latest Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have suggested the third-generation ‘phablet’ device will run a 5.7-inch display, smaller than the 6-inch screen previously mooted for the phone.

Adding further backing to claims of a September 4 Samsung Galaxy Note 3 unveiled made earlier this week, the Korean Herald has suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S4 maker will indeed hold a Note 2 unveiling on the eve of IFA 2013, with the stylus bragging device to run a 5.7-inch screen.

If accurate, the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen size could kick off a trend of incremental 0.2-inch size increases between Note models. While the original Note lined up at 5.3-inches, last year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 2 brought a 5.5-inch screen size to the table.

Building on the smartphone-turn-tablet hybrids’ sizeable foundations, the reports out of Samsung’s native Korea have also pegged the Huawei Ascend Mate and Sony Xperia Z Ultra rival as supporting 4G LTE connectivity options.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumours

Earlier this week, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours claimed a September 4 release date was on the cards, with reported sources “close to the matter” suggesting the device would touch down on the press days leading up to IFA 2013. The Berlin based conference is to be held between September 6 and 11.

Although the phone has yet to be formally unveiled, a range of claimed Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have been doing the rounds, with the S4 sibling tipped to run a hefty 3GB of RAM alongside the same 1.6GHz eight-core CPU found inside its 5-inch sibling, in certain markets at least.

Further Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have pointed towards a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a 1080p Full HD display resolution making the cut.

iPad 5 could get better battery life and screen quality thanks to Sharp’s IGZO display tech

Rumours on the Korean IT News website suggest Apple is looking to Sharp’s IGZO display technology to help its next generation of iPads and MacBooks consume less power and improve screen quality.

IGZO stands for Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide. It is a completely see-through compound semiconducting material that can be used to create a thin film layer to power displays. It significantly improves electron mobility compared to amorphous silicon semiconductors used in the current gen iPad 4 and MacBook Air.

This is good news for consumers as it means better battery life, higher pixel density and tiny screen bezels.

Sharp claims that displays with a PPI (pixels per inch) ratio of 500 are possible. That would almost double the 264 PPI Retina display Apple’s current-gen iPad 4.

Smaller bezels mean the potential for true edge to edge displays for mobiles, tablets and laptops; intriguingly IGZO technology also arms manufacturers with the ability to create ultra-high resolution, energy efficient devices with totally transparent screens.

Power savings of up to 90% on still images on screen have been touted by Sharp. The main power efficiency comes from the ability of IGZO to display an image on the screen even after power has been switched off. This would increase battery life for phones, tablets and laptops as one of the main power drains is the screen. The already impressive battery life of the Macbook Air, for example, could be extended even further.

Significantly Sharp’s IGZO technology can also be adapted for use in OLED displays, paving the way for Samsung, which uses OLED technology for its flagship Galaxy S4 phone, to keep pace with Apple.

Sharp is the only manufacturer currently set up to mass-manufacture IGZO panels and has begun to increase production. LG is also making changes to its production lines to be able to mass produce IGZO displays.

Twitter apps update eliminates annoying DM bugbear, improves Discovery

Twitter has issued a relatively minor update for its iOS, Android, Mac, iPad and mobile web and desktop clients, which finally resolves one of the most complained-about aspects of using the social network.

The new app now syncs direct messages to 'mark as read' across all devices, rather than appearing as a new message when a user checks in on a different device.

Previously users would pick up their mobile handsets to be notified of a new direct message, despite having previously dealt with it on the desktop and vise versa.

"We've heard your feedback: Direct messages now sync across all your devices," the company announced in a blog post on Monday evening.

Other improvements for the Android, iPhone, iPad and mobile web apps include better search results, with account previews now featuring a full biography of the user, while a swipe to the right will display suggestions similar to your query.

The blog post explained: "This account preview makes it easier and faster to find and learn more about the accounts you’re looking for. And if you swipe the preview to the left, you’ll find similar accounts –– for example, if you search for the MLB, you’ll see suggestions for ESPN, Ken Rosenthal, and other MLB-related accounts.

"Additionally, a new in-app indicator in search results will show you when there are new Tweets for your query, making it easier for you to stay up to date on the latest Twitter conversation."

Twitter for iPhone gets one improvement the others don't with a new built-in tweet composer that appears when you tap to expand a tweet, as you can see in the picture above.

Pimp Your Screen arrives on Android to pretty up your phone

Those with an iOS device are probably familiar with Pimp Your Screen, an app that brings hundreds of high resolution background images to iDevices. The app has finally migrated over to Android, and it has some new features to go with Android's higher level of customization.

The app on iOS was mainly a way to get images that were well suited to the layout of icons on the home screen. The Android version of Pimp Your Screen is a package of high-resolution wallpapers along with various widgets. The wallpapers are accessed in the app itself, but the widgets go in the system widget drawer with all the others.

The wallpapers can be sorted through by category, or by what's new and popular. The categories include sci-fi, nature, sports, abstract, and more. You can scroll through the gallery and save the ones you like for later (this is actually a bit slow—it could use some tweaking). When applying the image, the app allows you to select the width, and thus the scrolling effect. Not all Android devices do this, but it's nice to have the option. There is also a function which automatically rotates your wallpaper as new images are added.

Widgets come in several different types. There are clocks, weather trackers, and settings toggles. None of these are new to Android, but this is a solid package of them all grouped together. The clocks are mostly on the funky side, with neon lights, big text, retro LCDs, or abstract designs. The popular Android weather flip-clock trope is also included here. The weather icon are more understated, as are the settings controls.

Most of the widgets are good in Pimp Your Screen, but there are some packages that do a better job, like Beautiful Widgets. The draw with this new app is that it also has the database of high-resolution wallpapers built in, and it's only $0.99. That's a bit cheaper than the competition, and there is a lot more content here than in the iOS version for the same price.

Nokia Lumia 1020 press pictures leak ahead of 41MP camera phone unveiling

Claimed Nokia Lumia 1020 pictures have hit the web, with the reported press shots of the upcoming 41-megapixel camera phone leaking via Twitter.

Widely expected to be announced during Nokia’s New York based launch event next week, the Nokia Lumia 1020, a handset which has also done the rounds with EOS branding, is set to be the first phone to bring the Finnish manufacturer’s 41-Megapixel PureView snapper to its flagship Windows Phone line.

Making a premature appearance courtesy of repeated tech tipster @evleaks, the latest Nokia Lumia 1020 images have emerged exactly one week before the manufacturer’s July 11 unveiling.

Following on from the recently launched Nokia Lumia 925, latest Nokia Lumia 1020 rumours have suggested that the Windows Phone 8 powered handset will land as a challenger to the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, a 16-megapixel camera hosting spinoff to the Samsung Galaxy S4 with a 10x optical zoom.

While the newly leaked Nokia Lumia 1020 pictures show a handset remarkably similar to Nokia’s past Lumia offerings, the images have failed to offer a glimpse at the phone’s rear. Past leaked images have pointed to the device sporting a bulbous rear to support the low-light specialist camera.

Offering little details on the phone, the Twitter based leak came with the simple message: “Nokia Lumia 1020 for AT&T, 2013.”

Last month the @evleaks was the first to point to the upcoming Nokia handset becoming the company’s first phone to break through the three digit naming convention. A Tweet from the serial tipster stated: “EOS = Lumia 1020.”

Although Nokia has yet to formally confirm the Nokia Lumia 1020 release, the manufacturer has repeatedly teased the device, recent stating there are “41 million reasons” to tune into next week’s unveiling, a tip that all but confirms the phone’s PureView camera inclusion.
